Back at Home!

10 August 2009

Last Wednesday M and I left town on the motorcycles to attend her cousin’s wedding in Pennsylvania. Over all it was a good trip if you don’t count the first day.

We made it about 80 miles before we ran into rain. It wasn’t too bad at first so we pushed on and ended up getting really dumped on a couple of times. We had to pull off and clear out our eyes because the rain was running into ‘em so fast we couldn’t blink the water out fast enough to see where we were going! I thought I had washed out my contacts at one point, it was so bad. So we holed up in a hotel room for the rest of the day while we tried to dry out our stuff.

The next day (Thursday) dawned bright and clear so we had to boogie on down the road to make up for the mileage we didn’t get on Wednesday. We ran the back roads all the way into Pennsylvania to the old farm house M’s parents had rented for the whole family.

The last couple of hours were pretty hard on M and her backside so I had to put up with a certain amount of bitching when we did stop for a break. But over all the road was in good shape and we only had one or two incidents where we encountered idiots on the road. But since it was all back roads we were riding on, we really couldn’t keep up a good amount of speed to cover the distance. It was all 55mph with a lot of twists and turns that slowed us down.

Once we got to the farmhouse, we settled in and got a bunch of time visiting with the family. M’s brother had both his kids there, but his wife couldn’t make it. She had a ton of work to do (she’s a University professor) so she couldn’t make it. I haven’t seen the kids but once or twice over the years myself so it was great getting to know them.

I found out that we were only a few miles away from the Flight 93 Memorial (the aircraft that was to have hit the White House on 9-11) so M and I went there to honor those who gave their lives for the rest of us. More in a later post on that…

On the way home we decided to run the highway on home, just to make up the time and so we would make it home with time to spare.

I came to the conclusion that we had rode nearly 1000 miles on the trip and we are glad to have made it home once again!
