Vegetable Requirements ...

I heard that some government 'authority' who has control over what is fed to school children has decided that if two tablespoons of tomato sauce are on a pizza, then pizza can be classified as a 'vegetable.'

Lee Harvey Oswald, where are you now that we need you?

Lunches in an inner city school (that I went to) were cheap (5 cents for the cheap lunch, 10 cents for the "rich" kids) and were nutritionally balanced and these were the Depression years. We're supposed to be smarter now, courtesy of advanced technology and instead we're going backwards.

T'was ever thus. That's why I brown bagged it all those years as a teacher.

Junk science is what it amounts to. First, tomato is not a vegetable. It is a fruit. Second, adding X to Z does not make Z an X. Basic algebraic stuff here! Who's running that nut house? Last but not least, the health benefits of real vegetables are being cast aside for convenience. If you cater to the pop tastes of the children, the children rule. That cannot be tolerated.

I went to Kota's school one day and had lunch with him and his classmates. I was shocked at the school lunch. A bird couldn't survive on what they are fed!

It is a vegetable partial (fractional?) serving, but it shouldn't be counted. School lunches are awfully important for too many kids. Think of all the lousy parents you hear about, and you can be sure the kids are not eating very well.

It's a combined food: bread/starch + vegetable + protein/dairy (cheese).

It's been classified that way in the school lunch program for decades, only usually they said it was the catsup that goes on French Fries.
