Church Difficulties ...

I am seeing more and more news about the church, meaning the entire Christian hegemony and not just the Catholic Church. (Why must I capitalize it? Hmmmm?)

The news is mostly not good news.

The Pope resigned. We are led to believe the official story, that he feels too old and mentally unable to perform the duties.

What duties!? All Popes have to do is stand at an open window once a week and make the sign of the cross to all those Italians standing out there on his lawn!

Maybe the reason Benedict has decided to remain within the walls of the Vatican - a sovereign country - is because of the child-boogering legal cases brought against him and that church in Europe. He is untouchable there.

More and more fundamentalist preachers are spouting fascist stuff. That has always gone on but lately it is really bad. It seems that they are all in for spousal abuse, child beating, funeral protesting and giving social security numbers to unborn zygotes.

It took me a very long time to shake religion off my back.

I have absolutely no regrets.

I don't miss my Catholic upbringing but I do wonder what to do for the upcoming little one... I'd like her to have SOME structured religion just to get a feel for it.

The religious think can really screw you up. I am glad that I no longer
a believer. Marta is right. Love and kindness are the only religions
that count and I find it sadly lacking in the religious community.

They should have a mandatory retirement age and make them all Pope Emeritii when they reach 80. Think of all the jobs it would create. MOL

All religion accomplishes is causing world conflict, intersect hatred, frenzied tunnel vision, and irrational prejudice. Other than that, it's fine, I suppose.

OH!not sure what to say.Is he tired ?worn out with all the traveling there.
I left my church years ago.Not because of the Pope.Just what they stand for.
This is very hard for the Italians to accept this.
No one knows where this is going. The Pope is their mentor and they need him or it.
I would love to see Father O'Malley from Boston to get this. But this is a long shot.
He has done wonder there about the abuse of the children.
Frankly.I do not give a damn who is going to be Pope unless it is O'Malley.

I think these popes feel their job is to look after and protect the other bishops and cardinals, not the believers of the church. And that's a hard job, protecting and defending child rapists and child-rape apologists.

This blog is a breath of fresh air ... shook religion off in my 20s, greatly influenced, of course, by my late husband and reinforced by my own life experiences with the patriarchical Greek church. Now mired in an Evangelical pit but picking my way carefully through the religious minefield known as SW Florida.

I just spent the weekend with my very devout Catholic cousins and completely forgot to ask what they think about the pope resigning. Maybe subconsciously I didn't want to get them started on religion.

I wonder too. I recall when the Singing Nun left her convent, Catholics thought it was scandalous. But since the Pope is practically worshipped, and he's leaving a position but not the priesthood, the feelings must be very mixed. Well, anyway John Paul was adored but I don't know about this one.
