My Pal, Alexa

I've been hearing about Alexa or a long time and the original was taller and more expensive ($179). Every time I went to Amazon I'd see echo but I didn't bother to find out what that was until recently.

For 50 bucks I figured it would be fun and hopefully useful so I went for it. There's actually a lot more I could have showed in the video but I didn't want it to get too long. She can also play music and read books from your Kindle account and a few other sources. "Alexa, play Fleetwood Mac" No problem. She says she's shuffling songs by Mac and begins playing them at random. She also plays WSKG which is my NPR station but I can't get it on the radio--only on my droid. So now I don't have to mess with all that. Just say, Alexa, play WSKG!

If you watch the video you'll notice that she is most definitely female. Sometimes I have to shout two or three times to get her to pay attention and stop what she's doing.

So, if you can part with 50 bucks fro something new and different, fun and useful, I'd recommend it. And if you don't have a droid to run the Alexa app, no problem, you can do the same thing from amazon.com/alexa.

non techie here happy with NPR and local classical music station. Alexa sounds as if she might wanna take over your life. Get out of my face, Al.

I wish she could do more. Ask a question, get a straight answer.

Very cool. I'm a computer nerd at heart. Recently installed Ubuntu on my new laptop.

It's an operating system like Windows and Mac, only it's open source (meaning others can submit edits and changes which might be made part of the official version) and it's free!

Now I feel like Martin: What is that?

What fun for fifty dollars!

Yeah, and it is AI so it does learn with time.

I kind of wanted one after seeing Meryl Streep's daughter on Mr.Robot asking Alexa if it loved her, and other questions. Alexa sounded pretty cagey.

Alexa doesn't get involved in that sort of thing.

Those are not the droids he's looking for.

Alexa would say, "I'm not capable of having this discussion".

Not for me--I'm still learning how to use a cell phone!
Okay, what's a droid?

Of course.

Okay--is there a charge for using the operating system? And can it get me a date for Saturday night? (Just asking!)

A droid is a phone or tablet that uses the Android operating system. Alexa is compatible with droid devices. The other player in the field is Apple, as in, iPhone. It is not compatible with Alexa but it does have it's own AI similar to Alexa. I think she's called Seri.

Oh, OK, AI is artificial intelligence. They learn as you go.
