The Old Neighborhood

Recently I was reminiscing with a buddy who is also originally from New Yawk City. I mentioned that there were no Chinese eateries in Middle Village (my neighborhood) when I was growing up, just a pizza joint and a few "candy stores", one of which also sold burgers and drinks. The neighborhood had at least one of everything else tho within easy walking distance--Two groceries, A&P and Bohack (where I bought my first pack of Camels from a machine in the lobby), clothing stores for men, women, and kids, a jewelry store, a pharmacy, two banks, a funeral home (from where both my parents were laid to rest 30 years apart), real estate, insurance, fresh fruit, a public library, and you name it. We had it all on Metropolitan Avenue--all within the span of 4 or 5 blocks.

When I went back to the "old neighborhood" to sell the family house in 2000 there were two Chinese takeouts and a lot of gated storefronts, although some of them were still in business. I don't think the area had a Wal-mart near by, but it did have a mall that was built after I departed in 1979.

Earlier today I was looking through my photos at the other site to be sure I wasn't leaving behind anything that I didn't have a copy of, and I came across this.....

That is St. Margaret's church and school. Rebuilt in its current configuration in 1935. I attended school there circa 1963-'67. I served mass, or whatever the duty of an alter boy was called, and I attended cub scout and boy scout meetings in the parish hall. Hmm... it's not so difficult after all to find pleasant memories from those days.

And now to the point of this post: There's a website called (something like) Forgotten Neighborhoods of New York where the picture of St. Margaret's originally came from. There were many other photos on the site that brought back memories too, although for some reason, they don't seem to have a picture of the beer distributor where I bought my first quart, or the liquor store where I bought my first bottle.

They didn't have a picture of "Nick & Andy's" either. It was two blocks off the main drag, but it had candy, toys, and egg-creams. Remember those? What I can't remember is whether an egg cream was 5 cents or 15 cents. I do remember that I always ordered chocolate, tho. Much the same as I do now when I order a flavored dessert.

Cigarette machines and egg creams! Ahhh! You're now scratching the surface long-forgotten memories! I too was an altar boy, and I went to parochial schools - St.Mary's Grammar School, where was intimidated my The Sisters of Mercy, Xavier High School, where I was indoctrinated by The Xavierian Brothers, and Marquette University, where I lost my faith with The Jesuits!

I went back to my old home town in Michigan last summer and was asked if I wanted to go thru my old house that I grew up in. I decided not too. For me at least I would rather keep the house I knew in my head than see the changes made.

First I lived on 72nd and Central Park West in a tiny studio, but it was a great neighborhood on top of a Szechuan Restaurant. BAck then you'd see John and Yoko going to the green grocer. Then I moved into Queens to the line between Astoria and Long Island City. It was all Greek, really close to STeinway Street and all the Greek bakeries. I ate a lot of Greek food back then. Still, living in Fl, I haven't had good Chinese food. None of it tastes like it did in NYC

it's just such a great place to visit... I used to want to live there for a year or two, but I don't know if I could handle it anymore being as old as I am. I am ready for serenity...
