Geezer Camp

The first planning meeting for this year's session of 4C Camp for Adults was held back in February and camp finally took place last weekend. We had two fun-filled days until the news of the eminent arrival of Hurricane Irene caused camp to come to an abrupt halt on Saturday after dinner. Prizes were all beautifully displayed for "casino night" which was to begin after dinner, but safety came first.

I took a few pics to post, including a pic of Donna teaching crochet to a couple of her students. I didn't sign up for any forums quite as wimpy as crochet, but I did take gourd art! I am not very artistic with paint (although I did enjoy wet-on-wet years ago) but I figured I could handle something as large and natural as a gourd... Anyway, first the pics, then perhaps more commentary...

I don't remember the older woman's name, but the one on the end of the sofa is Donna's sista, Sherri.

Mine is in the middle of the back row.

I didn't take part in archery, but my camper was parked across the road, so I snapped a few frames.

The campfire on Friday evening.

Prizes for Casino Night. They are all back in the boxes until next year. I saw a thing or two that I wouldn't have minded winning.

There is a list of forums and workshops posted on the webpage I linked too above. Camping to Create Caring Communities (4C) is an idea that we hope will be copied in other towns across the country. There was a film crew from a non-profit present and hopefully we'll make PBS, although there are no guarantees.

We only had minor flooding (as usual) here from the hurricane although parts of the northeast sustained heave damage. It took me two days to clean up the downed branches and get caught up, but you'd never know from looking that a hurricane had been here. We got the trailer out of the campground on Thursday and I must say that I'm very proud of Donna for making her first run with the camper! My buddy would have drove the thing home with her following in his car, but she took the coach by the horns and did it herself! Not a scratch on anything.

Donna's sista is already planning to come to camp again next year and I'm looking forward to it myself! I am the admin of the camp's facebook page and I expect to keep camp in the minds of those who already "like" the page. Hopefully I can grow the membership during the year!

Not much in other news... the garden is still producing profusely and the tree guy will be coming to do some pruning--hopefully before the next wind storm. Work on the roof should be completed before the snow flies and rain gutters should help reduce the amount of water that gets into the basement. So, all-in-all I am a happy camper even tho the camping season is most likely over for me this year.

Happy fall!

Looks like fun! I went to Campfire Girls camp every summer from 1st grade on and loved it. I'd like to go again.

Really great. I have a gourd-made-into-a-birdhouse-and painted-on-the-outside that I bought, but haven't put it out for the birds. My garden is packing it in due to the shorter days and cooler nights (frost on the roof next door last night), but it was better this year than last, so next year should be better yet.

That looks like so much fun. I would love to see something like that here.
How did this get started?

This was the fourth season of camp. I probably heard something about how it started, but I don't remember. What I do remember is that it was the people who were already active in the community who flocked to the new experience. I'll have to blog more about this when I get an answer to the question of the beginning. I emailed somebody who would know but haven't received an answer yet.

More people need to have this kind of social connection. I thought that
the hurricane would bring you back to us.

I haven't been gone. I load mybloggers every day and read at least the people I'm subscribed to (you are one of the few who still posts regularly). I don't always comment. Facebook had corrupted many of us. Four hundred and 20 characters is about all some of us can muster these days.

Pretty gourd. Yes, you are right. That's much more manly than crochet. Hope you win something at next years Casino Night.

They also had "fun with fabric" which I avoided. Maybe I should stick with the outdoor stuff--fly tying and camp cooking!

Sorry about camp having to be aborted but better safe than sorry6.
Your gourd looks ready for Christmas!

Somebody said the gourd look southwestern, but Christmas? Ugh!

That all looks like so much fun!

It felt like a real camping trip by having the trailer there. I don't know how I would have done in a cabin or the director's house.
