Friendly's - Restaurant Review

You're right. I don't often do restaurant reviews.... mainly because the only place I truly can't resist (until now) is the all-you-can-eat Chinese buffet. I can't tell ya how many franchises Friendly's has since every time I try to search Firefox enters my location or I get a "no location" if I guess at possible places. So let's just say it's a North-eastern thing.

Last time I was there more than six years ago I left disappointed. The sandwich was Ok, but I was far from full which is the worst possible way I can leave an eatery. But this time was different. The ad we had seen was 2 for $20 and we decided to try it for a change. the $20 included a shared appetizer and two entrees.

Stacy, the server on her first day back after two years brought us the appetizers and we were both hungry since we left home before breakfast, so we dug in before before I pulled the camera:

A few minutes later Stacy came back with another plate. She said some had fallen off so the kitchen prepared 10 more. The appetizers were very filling and the entrees came before we had finished them.

Donna had some sort of fried chicken salad:

I had chicken qu... ugh... I hope you recognize it because even google can't help me spell it. But they are under the fries. Triangular shaped with cheese and presumably chicken.

Donna had enough food left on her plate to request a box. I finished mine, but I was full. With tax and tip (no drinks except water for Donna at no charge) we spent $27. Expensive for lunch, but not having eaten breakfast and still being full for dinner, I got a day's worth of food out of the deal.

I took a survey from the receipt and printed a coupon for a BOGO "metl" sandwich. Maybe they'll get us back within the month. It was a pleasant experience.

What's the top appetizer photo? They look like fried cheese poppers - anyway, they look mighty tasty.

They called them fried mozzarella sticks (although they're short to be sticks). The were very tasty and very filling!

Nobody does Chinese, like New York City -- no buffet, all-you-can-eat eatery can do what imported chefs do on 1st Avenue near the United Nations. And if you go to Chinatown, down below Houston Street, you get mom-and-pop cafes on the second floors of old buildings, that serve dim sum (sic) just like in Kowloon. Okay, no martinis at those. City blocks in Manhattan each have more than one great place to eat. You can't begin to live long enough to try them all. And I am not even covering the other 4 burroughs -- Brooklyn, the Bronx, Staten Island and Queens. Try "Just Like Mothers" on Queens Boulevard near 72nd Avenue -- Polish blintzes made fresh -- sour cream, cherries, warm cheese. Oh Oh Oh

I grew up in Queens, but Middle Village wasn't known for it's culinary offerings. My buddy from upstate moved back to LI and he sends links about places they try. Upstairs, in many cases as you mention. It would be fun to spend time down there just to eat.

That was about it.We have a wonderful Chinese buffet on Wednesday.Real good. Can we expect you and Donna then.

If I live long enough there are a lot of places I need to get to.

John, just marinate the chicken in yogurt for a few hours, salt and pepper and roll in crushed cornflakes and cook in a 400 degree oven
uncovered. Use a little olive oil in the pan. Simple and good.

I tried this, (kind of). The yogurt made the thighs (with skin) beautifully brown. The skinless breast wasn't quite as visually appealing, but Donna said it was moist and juicy.

I'm still trying to figure out what moderation means!!!!!

At your age it isn't important.

What does 'full' mean???????????????
comment by greatmartin on June 27, 2013 7:10 AM ()
I'd try and explain, but I don't think you'd get it. Kind of like explaining to me why a person would have ONE drink.

Yes, we instantly recognized your Quesadillas. We usually have them accompanied by a salad. It is easy to make them with an appliance made just for that. Mexican food is a staple around here.

I've been looking for the post with the chicken and yogurt. My memory isn't worth a $%^@$^, but we bought yogurt yesterday!

The reality cooking shows that we are being bombarded with, there are 4 at the moment. Not one puts enough on the plate that would satisfy me, and another thing , they even have specialty ingredients , not the usuals you would use at home , even the spuds , a spud is a spud in my book.
At least you got a good feed

I watched one of those shows when it first started a few years back (Hell's Kitchen), but it got old fast. I eat well, but cook simple. I don't do most recipes that people post because I'm usually missing an ingredient or two. And yeah, quantity counts too!

In the last couple of years they have closed 2 of the 3 Friendly's in this area. One they knocked down the building and are putting in another Moe's, which we already have here. The other one was in a mall here, tbd what will be occupying that space.

The franchise tab on their web page is due to be revised mid-2013. They seem to be reevaluating their business structure. I can only compare my prior experience to one visit years ago, but I will certainly return there based on my experience today.

$27 is about average here for lunch--only we get one dessert also!!!
comment by greatmartin on June 26, 2013 6:29 PM ()
Their dessert deal was to add a drink and 3-scoop sundae for $4 each. We didn't go for it. The sundae lists for 4.99, so I guess it's a deal. But I was quite full when dessert time came.

Quesadillas. They are one of my favorite dining out orders, but I've never had them with fries. It all looks good.
comment by kitchentales on June 26, 2013 5:42 PM ()
That's them. The other option other than fires was spanish rice (yuck) or coleslaw. I like to order things that I can't/don't make at home. Another promo was build your own burger, but I really didn't pay much attention to that.
