Benny is Fine for His Age

image

The big guy is fine for his age. He's just having the same experience as me and my buddy and probably a bunch of other geezers. Doc did a pretty thorough exam. I hope my doc doesn't handle me like that next month. No tumors or stones or anything else on the list. No sign of cancer, just slowed reflexes.

He doesn't need a belly band or anything like that, although I did get a bottle of Proin 50mg. He can have one a day for a few days if he begins spontaneously leaking again, although for the past several days he's been fine.

I had to wake him at 6a.m. this morning to get the urine sample. I figured that if for some reason I couldn't do it, I'd get one more shot at 8:30 before the appointment. He looked back and stopped when he realized that something wasn't quite right, but by then there was enough in the container. So that turned out to be easy.

Buster goes in on Monday for a nail clipping before which he receives a shot of happy juice since he was traumatized by the nail clipping experience years ago. The same vet's office had tried to do it after the botched attempt and he could be heard from the waiting room bouncing off the wall and howling, so from then on, he's sedated. He fell through the cracks last January when Benny had surgery and Buster somehow didn't get his distemper injection, so they'll bring him up-to-date on that too.

Off to make coleslaw... Happy Indian Summer!

Happy to hear that Benny's problems are not serious. I just commented on your first post about him -- catching up on 550 e mails.

He's got good people looking out for him as well.

How old is Mr. Benny again? Kraymer is 9 and moaning and groaning with every move he makes, poor fella.

Best estimate for Benny's B-day is November 1999. There was discrepancy between his adoption papers and what our vet though, so that's the best guess. He's in good shape for a geezer.

Rex just got back from the Dr. He is being treated for arthritis. He
doesn't take his meds gracefully. I wonder about giving testosterone
to dogs that have been neutered?

The article in Laura's comment highlights the line about testosterone causing aggression, but it doesn't say in neutered or unneutered males. I have to take Buster in on Monday for nail trimming (under happy juice) and distemper vaccine, so I'll ask.

Did you see this website?

https://www.old-dog-treats-and-rawhide.com/dog-incontinence.html

It mentions testosterone injections for old dogs.

"Proin (Phenylpropanolamine/Sudafed)is the most common and effective RX treatment for dog incontinence. "

That is the drug the the vet send us home with.

Looks like testosterone isn't as new the the article Martin saw reports it to be. I'd really like to get it for Benny, although this article says it can increase aggression
!

Let's hope Benny gets all the love and attention he apparently deserves. I miss my dogs, but not the vet bills.

This is the first time Benny's been to the vet more than once in the same year. Guess that comes with age too.

Check out Florida--I don't know if it is being done in other States--Florida is weird!!!
comment by greatmartin on Oct 18, 2012 8:30 PM ()
If Florida does it, it probably started in California. I'll check.

Actually from what I understand it has nor been approved by the FDA--if it helps any it was on ABC news.

I can't find it even when I include ABC news in the search terms. The college at Delhi has a veterinary program and there are other places to look tho.

That's great news that he's okay. Hope the prescription helps. Sending hugs to him for being such a good boy to put up with going to the doctor.

He walks right up their driveway when we get down there. I think he has a good time seeing the other patients. Even Buster is Ok with the place, until he gets to the exam room door... then it's run the other way. They usually have the happy juice ready.

Better start doing what Benny does!!!!!!
There was a report on TV the other day about giving 'old' dogs (NO, NOT YOU!!) testosterone shots and adds 5+ years to their life plus gives them a lot more energy

I googled News: testosterone for older dogs and didn't get any results. Maybe it's somebody's new idea. The pill bottle says "for dogs only", but I'm going to goodle the generic name of the drug. Yeah... call me Bubba.
