I shot some video on the way home from appointments today. Oneonta is the closest city of any size in the area. It has a Wal-mart super center and a mall. Home Depot, Lowe's, Dick's sporting goods, Michael's, and the usual assortment of banks, insurance brokers and fast food joints.
The road itself is from the West end of Oneonta (where I was having Chinese Buffet while Donna went to a doc appointment) turning into the main State Highway (28 as seen in some of the other videos. Franklin Mountain is the high point in this area, but the road goes around it without going through a notch. The back roads that were used before this road was built are steep with switchbacks and in some cases, unpaved sections. Fifty years ago the entire area was farmed. Geezers my age can still name the farms that existed between Delhi and Oneonta.
Dairy is still big business in NY, and there are still active dairy farms around here, but not like it used to be. There is also the small pumpkin farm I mention in the video. They produced butternut squash and other fall crops, but we bought only a pumpkin last time through.
The pumpkin developed a black spot on the side and it was pretty soft when we left this afternoon, so I mentioned it to the guy. He said to leave it in the bag and take two. Now that's the old fashioned way to do business.
Benny's appointment with the vet is in 12 hours and I have to be ready to get a urine sample in the morning. Hopefully I'll be back tomorrow evening with good news.
