Today, for the first time since I started working with my dad, someone threatened to kill me. Seriously.
Jennifer, Sofia and I had taken a storage building from Norman, OK to Henryetta, OK. We were supposed to repossess another one on our way back home. On the way down, I stopped by the repo location to warn them and give them a chance to get their stuff out of it. The story went like this. The son's ex-girlfriend had ordered it and given it to him. They broke up. No one has been making the payments. It's on the son's parents' property. I told the lady of the house that I would be back in an hour to pick it up. She said she would talk to her husband.
When I returned, the man of the house came out to the gate when he saw me pull up. I extended my hand and said, "Hi, my name is Jeremy." He just stared at me. About then, Sofia started crying in the truck and he said, "Is that your children in the truck?" I replied, "Does it matter?" He said, "If it is and you want to see them alive again, you better not set foot on my property!" We went back and forth, me explaining that the building wasn't theirs and that I was actually doing them a favor. Next time, they will come with the authorities and a court order and will remove the building with all its contents. In order to recover them, he would have to go to Norman and pay all that is due and still not get to keep the building. He kept threatening me to not step foot on his property and to come back with the law and that he didn't want to see my face again. I said, "Alright, you'll see someone sooner or later, but they will come back with the authorities, because I'm going to tell that you threatened my child's life. (Here's where I misunderstood his earlier threat. I thought he implied he would hurt Sofia. He was implying that he would kill me.) He said, "I did no such thing. I would never hurt a child." I repeated what he had said to me and he denied. Dad says I should have called the police right then and told them that I was there to repossess a building and that the property owner had threatened my life. At least that way, there would be a record of it for when the next repo guy goes to get it. I wasn't thinking that clearly, but it would have been a good idea. He might have gotten scared and told me to go ahead and take the building, which is all I was after anyway. He looked about like this!
In just the last month, I've had the police called on me, been dog bitten and threatened with my life. It's time for different work. That man was a moron. It's going to be the hard way from here on out for him, especially since my brother, Sofia's uncle ,is the dispatcher who orders repos and collections. There's no telling what he would have said and done had he been there. He's a hot head.
