Teal's New York City

I was remembering today, as I replied to a comment Teal made on my previous post, a vacation our family took to New York when I was a kid. It was more like a working vacation, as my dad's job with the Oklahoma Military Department often took him to confereces in far flung parts of the nation. We would often make a vacation out of it and go along. Believe me, at those conferences, there is still plenty of time in the afternoon to do the sightseeing a body would want to do. Back to my story.

He always had (and still has) an uncanny knack for finding the seediest, most dangerous parts of any city, without even trying. I don't think he sought them out, they found him. Well, in New York, guess where we found ourselves on our first foray into the city...the Bronx. He had heard about the Bronx in movies and in the news and just wanted to see it for himself. This time I guess he did seek it out. Lo and behold, we pull up within a block of some policemen in a kefluffle with some malcreant and he wanted to get closer. So, against the insistent pleading of my mother that he just get back in the car and drive away, he went walking up as close as he could in order to find out what was going on. I don't remember what the final analysis was, but my real confusion rests in whether or not I accompanied him. I would like to imagine that I did, but I really don't remember. I might ask him next time I see him.

Now, I don't in any way mean to imply that Teal's New York is the Bronx, but I rarely think of New York without thinking of her, now that we all know how terribly fond she is of the city.

In other news, since my nephews are coming in from Fort Worth this weekend to spend the week with my parents, I'm going to put up my mother's swimming pool today. Dad has the truck and trailer away on an extended portable building delivery, so I get today off in addition to my regularly scheduled Monday off.

We need a little gate at our house before we can put our pool up. There are too many neighborhood children who might be tempted to take a dip without supervision. I've found it's just better to keep your pool a secret when you can. Especially from children who are prone to walk into the back yard uninvited anyway. Fortunately, we have a very tall privacy fence with no gaps all the way around our back yard. We only lack the gate.

I wish I could lead a bunch of my MyBloggers pals on a tour of New York City. If one is not familiar with it, it's nice to have a guide. (When I win the Lotto -- watch this space).

I wonder how different your tour would be from mine?!?!?! In the current series I am writing "7 Decades" there will be 3-4 parts about places in Manhattan.

Now THAT would be nice! I always prefer traveling with an insider. That would certainly be an interesting group for a tour.

Okay, where to start? STOP PICKING ON MY BRONX!!! I was born there but in the upper middle class section called Pelham Parkway!!!
Looks like everybody is talking about New York-- in my current series "7 Decades" I just wrote 3 sections about NYC in the 60s---no, not 1860s---1960s!--which I will be posting this and next week.
Whether it was the Bronx or Hell's Kitchen in Manhattan--and, trust me, that was the most dangerous section in NYC--I always felt safe, maybe because I was a New Yorker and knew how to handle myself in the city???

I had friends who rented an apartment in the Bronx when their Village apartment building was being renovated. It was bleak. I hope your experience was better.

Oh I'm not picking on the Bronx. At least back then, (twenty-five years ago) it had a reputation for being dangerous. I'll have to go check out your series.

I was married to a man who always searched out the off beat places and
ignored the good ones. We are looking forward to our dinner with you, Jenny,
Sofia, Mike and dear Fredo.

We are, too! I wish you could see my garden! Almost everything is finally coming out, except the okrie.

If your mother pleaded for your father not to go, it's highly unlikely she would allow her son to go.I was in New York City when I was four or five years old. I remember being mortified in a department store where the change room was one big room and all the ladies where stripping down to try on new clothes. I don't remember the bus incident when my mother stepped off the bus and as she turned around to lift me down the doors closed and she banged on the bus as she ran beside it until the other passengers realized what had happened and told the driver to stop.

Oh my! I always wondered at the open showers in public school locker rooms. Not my style either.
I asked my Mom about the Bronx thing, and she said she thought we DID go with him. Imagine!

My dad was like that, too, would go nose around just to see what was going on. I think part of it is they grew up in a more trusting world.

Good luck with the gate and the pool. I get excited about any DIY project, not just at my house. For us, there is the planning part, which is either filled with dread or optimism (and has been known to take years for even a small project); the start, which often involves at least two trips to the store; the middle where things go wrong, requiring more trips to the store on a more urgent basis; and the eventual completion where we decide that wasn't so bad after all and why did we wait so long to do it.

Your DIY projects sound just like ours.
