Dangerous Times

Following, a warning I received in my email this afternoon:

United States Consulate General Guadalajara

PLEASE CIRCULATE THIS IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT TO

AS MANY AMERICAN CITIZENS AS POSSIBLE

SUBJECT: WARDEN MESSAGE - SECURITY UPDATE

Date: November 19, 2010

BEGIN TEXT.

Due to a variety of security incidents in various parts of the consular district, the U.S. Consulate General in Guadalajara urges U.S. citizen residents and visitors to remain vigilant and makes the following security recommendations:

1.      Avoid all unnecessary travel to Colotlan, Jalisco near the Zacatecas border because of an increasingly volatile security situation, including  roadblocks during daylight hours by individuals posing as police and/or military.  The Consulate General has previously advised against unnecessary travel to Yahualica, Jalisco.

2.      Use extreme caution when traveling near the borders between Jalisco and the states of Zacatecas and Michoacán.

3.      Driving between cities should be undertaken only during daylight hours.  Extra caution should be exercised on the road between Guadalajara and Mazamitla, Jalisco, where an increasing number of security incidents have been reported.

4.       Avoid all unnecessary travel to the city of Tepic, Nayarit.  Exercise extreme caution on the non-toll portion of the Route 15 bypass around Tepic.

The Consulate General emphasizes that there are currently no specific security advisories for the Guadalajara metropolitan area, including the Lake Chapala/Ajijic area, nor for the coastal resort areas of Puerto Vallarta/Riveria Nayarit and Manzanillo, Colima and their surroundings.

In other news, Jennifer and I are in Guadalajara enjoying a little time off, while doing a little work on the side.

Not looking forward to any "pat downs". Fortunately, we're driving out for Christmas, so we avoid that whole scenario, although I might prefer that to facing the increasing dangers of road travel in Mexico.

Just read Randy's post about the dismal education (among other things) that American youths are receiving. We'll pay for that. We already are in so many ways.

We are in the full swing of Christmas celebrations at our house here in Ocotlan. Since we have to leave in mid-December for our trip out to the States, we thought we would go ahead and get started. For those worried that Christmas might eclipse Thanksgiving, never fear. We're doing to do that up in fine style as well. In fact, I'm gonna go looking for my turkey right before we leave Guadalajara today. Pumpkin pie and everything else. Small affair with a friendly couple on the 25th.

Hope you a safe trip home. I will worry about you until you are safely on USA soil. I miss my trips to Mexico, just glad I had visits to all the wonderful places there in the past.

Be cautious. Nena

The last tree looks a lot like mine. Err on the side of caution.

I worry about your safety in Mexico and "pray" nothing bad happens. I'm guessing you cheated and used last year's Christmas tree photo! Enjoy your vacations. Good luck.

I love your trees. We have a fiberoptic one around here somewhere. Those security warnings are what I'd expect to see for Americans in some far-off African or mid-Eastern country, not friendly, warm Mexico, just to the south of us. Something I think people here turn the blind eye to is that a lot of that illegal, threatening activity is due to running drugs that are consumed in the United States. Drug abuse hurts a lot more people than most of us want to recognize.
