Our Story Continues:
When last we left Theresa, she was living the life of the swinging bachelorette, in the booming metropolis (by West By God standards) of Crackerburg and working on the liver disease which would eventually kill her at the tender age of 50 something. Soon the drinking takes it's toll. She looses her job at the garter snap factory and drifts from one dead end position to another, often suplimenting her meager earnings by selling her favors. Once concidered at attractive woman, she begins to put on weight and the alcohol begins to ravage her looks. She is on a downward slide to perdition and she doesn't care...as long as the booze holds out.
Meanwhile:
Nathaniel has married the girl of his dreams, an attractive, light skinned charmer and they begin to have a family. They first have a son, Nathaniel, Jr. then a coupla years later, a daughter, Debralynn. Nathaniel does what he can to support his growing family but his heart's desire is a career in law inforcement. He is just about ready to submit his application to the police academy when he gets an ominous letter in the mail. The President of the United States has sent him greetings. He has been drafted to go and save the world for democracy in the Korean Conflict. He is appauled. He appeals to the draft board for a deferment as he has two small children and a third in the oven. Alas, the draft board has deaf ears and off he goes.
On his way overseas, Nathaniel makes a stop in Crackerburg, West By God. The bus stopped there and he knew some people so he decides to take a couple of days for a last fling because he was going to war and could be killed at anytime. This was 1952 in America. Most of society is segregated, including bars. So when Nathaniel walked into a bar that catered to African Americans, he was surprised to find a white woman sitting at the end of the bar. (As was often the case, white people could go anywhere with impunity but blacks could not. ) Nathaniel knocks back a few and works up the courage to approach the woman. No one still living knows what exactly the exchange was between them but they end up at her place where they revel in carnal bliss for the next coupla days. Finally, Nathaniel has to be off to the war and is soon just a lovely memory in Theresa's gin soaked revelry. Untill..... later when Theresa realises her worst fears are true. She is pregnant. The thing that she has managed to avoid for all these years of loose virtue has landed square on her. One can only assume that this knowledge and the stress that accompanied such a prospect caused her to drink even more. She ponders who the most likely suspects might be. By counting the days she comes to the shattering conclusion that it can only be one person. The black soldier she'd bedded some two months previous. And she did not want this child.
