As a Black person if you had a magic potion to
change everyone Black, would you? Let's say it is a love potion, would you make
someone take it? Now sub any of the following for Black: White, thin, fat, tall,
short, male, female, etc., would you?
Timothy, played by Tanner
Cohen, is a gay student in an all male school and is harassed every day by most
of the students and the coach on the faculty. He has a gay male friend, Max, and
a girl, Frankie, who likes Max.
Timothy is cast in the
school's production of Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" and as the
picture, basically, follows that plot he discovers/makes a secret potion, that
when sprayed in someones eyes they become gay. The coach falls in love with the
school's principal, the Principal's wife falls in love with Timothy's mother who
is dealing with accepting that her son is gay and two girls fall in love with
Frankie while all the male students fall in love with each other and, most
important, Jonathon, a soccer star, who Timothy has the hots for, falls in love
with Timothy.
The best part of the film
is the music by Jessica Fogle and the
lyrics, by Corey James Krueckeberg,
are many of the actual words from Shakespeare's play. Most of the cast have
pleasant, if not great, voices but the acting, especially at the beginning of
the film, is below standards especially that of most of the adults except for
Timothy's mother played by Judy McLane.
I was surprised to learn that Zelda Williams is
Robin Williams daughter. Though her role is written in a 'maniac' way she
doesn't play it like her father would.
All the boys are cute, sweet (even when trying to be
nasty) and young if you like cute, sweet and young. I don't like cute, sweet and
young and really wasn't impressed with them though Tanner Cohen has a good voice
and does improve acting as the picture progresses.
I understand most gay
themed independent films have a low, small budget but so do many nongay independent films and yet the former
always look 'poor' with less than stellar actors and such is the case here. The
most that can be said about the production values are that they are
adequate.
The theme, the handling of the main story, shows
some imagination but sometimes falls into poor camp. It is very nonsexual for a gay film and except for some same
sex kisses pretty tame though the idea of nongay people waking up one day to find
themselves gay (not a choice in their case either! LOL) and just accept it without any
repercussions except a look here and then is realistic--almost a fairy
tale!
