The first week of October was sort of crazy with 24/7 warnings about Hurricane Matthew coming our way and being the first storm in 11 years that would hit us but that was just part of the week.
In the video below are just a few things I went about doing though I must admit on Thursday October 6 I saw Fort Lauderdale like I don’t recall ever seeing before. At 2 PM EVERYTHING and I mean EVERYTHING was closed down from banks to gas stations, to stores to restaurants—not even a 7-11 open!
It was all over by Friday and everything was open and working. I combined all I usually do on Thursday, like going to the Dollar Tree, Office Depot, Winn-Dixie, etc., with going to the movie, eating out and seeing a musical on Friday, the latter being rare but will explain.
In any case we went to see 1) “The Girl On A Train” which was a waste of time.
2) That evening the 20th anniversary tour of “Rent” opened at the Broward Performing Arts Center doing only 5 performances over the weekend which is why we went—usually shows open on Tuesday as will “The Illusionists” will on October 11.
3) I have mentioned discovering a Peruvian/Cuban restaurant called Cabo Blanco that is sensational. They have 32 lunch specials with the most expensive being $10.99 and I am working my way through them! When we went this day A) Allen and Anthony ate the shrimp with spaghetti which I had before. It is a big dish with a dozen large shrimp served with a cup of soup and bread with 2 spicy dips and not only is it delicious but only costs $8.99 B) I don’t know what they use the stand for but it is in the shape of a fiddle and I love it! C) I had the steak and spaghetti also for $8.99. The place is furnished with white tables and white coverings for the hanging lamps. I really look forward to going to this place.
4) One of my most favorite restaurants in Fort Lauderdale is the Café Vico where I had my 20th Leap Year birthday party on February 29, 2016. Before going to see “Rent” we decided to have dinner here and it was excellent as always—though prices have gone up! A & B) I had the Chicken Picatta while C) Allen had the Chicken Francese both served with a twirl of pumpkin, a side of broccoli and a side of pasta plus their delicious rolls and garlic dip. D) With a desert tray like this it is sort of hard to choose one but I had E) the Tartufo and F) Allen had the Brownie Bash.
5) Richard surprised me with a new copy of “A CHORUS LINE FAQ” which is a show I never get tired of seeing or reading about and I always learn something new.
6) Okay, Hurricane Matthew—with all the warnings we dodged the bullet and (if you can get by my gorgeous face) look out the windows and you will see a normal South Florida cloudy day!
7) I caught a shot of this mother (?) and baby heading for shelter when it started to get gray and dark as if a storm might be coming.
8) This is the tree right outside my window which was sheered cleaned during Wilma 11 years ago and grew back beautifully and more full than before—it is Fall and the leaves are starting to turn colors. Yes, we do have seasons down here!
All in all a busy first week of October which also ushered in the Jewish New Year!
