In 1976 I sat in front of my television
in Memphis, Tennessee and watched the opening number on the Tony Award
show of a new musical that had opened off-Broadway and had transferred
to the Shubert Theatre. It
proceeded to become the longest running American musical and 34 years
later still holds that record. The show was "A Chorus Line" and it
became the longest running musical due to the fact that it was about
applying for a much needed job and who couldn't identify with that?
The
opening number is the initial audition (interview) and at the end of it
there are 16 people left competiting for 8 openings (jobs.) I was so
overtaken by the music, dance and lyrics of the first song that I called
NYC the next day to buy tickets.
What you are about to watch isÂ
how the show opens and, as exciting as it is, it doesn't even come close
to what it will, and does, do to you when you are a member of the
audience.
