Taurus--a Restaurant Review

Our 'alternative' newspaper, "New Times"
came out with 'The Best of 2010' listing a restaurant called Taurus  as
'Best Steak Under $10', not too far from where Allen lived so after
seeing "Solitary Man" we decided to have lunch there. When we entered we
were greeted by the waiter who said we could sit wherever we want. The
place was empty and though we may have preferred sitting near the window
there was a big TV with the soccer game on.

We were trying to figure out whether it was
a Brazilian or Argentinian restaurant and it turned out to be Peruvian!

We arrived at 3:12 PM and the lunch time
ended at 3 PM. The server, (Pablo?), gave us the dinner menu and the
items were certainly a lot more than $10. I explained we had come for
lunch and making a long story short the owner or manager, who we never
saw, said we could order off the lunch specials.

Allen ordered
the flank steak with a si
de of vegetables, a house salad and diet coke. I ordered the skirt steak, a
house salad, mashed potatoes and coffee. We were served warm rolls with
3 dips of which two were 'hot' and our salads. After we finished that
course he brought out the steaks. Both were cooked the way we asked, the
meat was tasty, his vegetables looked fresh frozen and my mashed
potatoes, 2 scoops, had cheese grated over the top of them. Though not large
portions, between the rolls, salad, meat and si
de dishes more than satisfactory. We did share a dessert--I forget the
name--which was a ball of sherbet (mango?) covered with hard chocolate
which was very good.

The server was attentive, offering us more
rolls, refilling my coffee and water without having to be asked and
serving, and removing, plates in a timely manner.

The restaurant
has been open for a year and a half. The tables were set with black
table clothes and red napkins and there were a few pictures on the walls
but the whole place, the ambiance, was cold, sterile.

There was nothing 'wrong' with the Taurus restaurant with the food and service more than
satisfactory and the price was average for lunch but the bottom line is
that it is just another restaurant, nothing 'special', nothing to make
it different from hundreds
of other restaurants so, consequently,
we probably won't be going back.

Their web page says the following:  "A place where steak is taken
seriously, and remember IT'S NOT JUST A MEAL,
IT'S AN EXPERIENCE!" but I didn't find that to be true.  Being fair it
might be a completely different experience in the evening.

I eat out 2-3 times a week every week--most restaurants and the food they serve are mediocre if they even reach that standard
