Surprise--the Government is Wasting Money Again!

I may be wrong here and if I am I'm sure I will be corrected.

Regarding the rebates we are suppose to be getting in May I understand I am eligible because I make more than $3,000 a year in social security.

I have not filed an income tax form for over 6 years as my income (and age)--strictly social security--does not require me to.

If I understand the rules correctly in order to get the rebate I have to file an income tax form this year. Since the government can look at social security records I would assume that they can find out on the computer all the senior citizens who make more than $3,000 a year just from social security records and send out the rebate.

I won't get into if people like me should even get a rebate.

If I have it right they will now have to pay government employees to open thousands of envelopes, check and record thousands of tax returns plus file them all.

Isn't this a waste of money?? I find it hard to believe that the government would waste our/your money--pardon me while I try to catch my breath from laughing so hard!!

Some journalist who was angry at the govt for doing this rebate gave hers to a struggling family, the father was in the Army. That seemed like a wonderful thing to do. There's always the Veterans Hospital system, too. Most people, though, will need it to pay heating bills and stuff like that.

Keep in mind we're talking about the government... they're here to help us, right? I always thought of a "rebate" as something one gets after buying some large ticket item; I guess what we've bought here is gift-wrapped political BS.

Yes, it's a waste. Do you think either party would exclude anyone within reach of AARP's clout and deny "starving old people" their own rebates while everyone else gets one? In an ELECTION year? No bleeping way. Too many votes to buy. It's a benefit of incumbency to spread wealth, no matter how shameful and outrageous. I'll save the economics and arguments for drastic tax reduction for some other time (my own blog) but I'm at least as cynical about this as you.
