Star Trek--a Movie Review

To paraphrase Val in "A Chorus Line" just before she starts singing "Dance
10, Looks 3": "Let's get one thing straight: I never heard of Star Trek, I never
saw Star Trek, I don't give a F---- about Star Trek."

Okay, it wasn't as bad as that. Of course I had
heard of Star Trek but I, honestly, never saw a TV episode or any of the movies
because, mainly, I am not a Sci-Fi fan.

I won't go into details but making a long story
short I went to see the movie "Star Trek" today. Take away the special effects
and it would be a 40-45 minute story. As in most movies that use special effects
this one goes way overboard opening with a 'war' and there are many, too many,
throughout the movie. I will admit anytime the film turned to the story of Kirk
and Spock it held my interest but as soon as it turned to special effects I was
turned off. I am not one who will (or has gone) go to see the terminator or
transformer films.

I will, reluctantly, say
that the 126 minute film did seem a lot shorter but unless you are a sci-fi fan or a star trek fan or a special
effects fan or all three this movie is not for you.

Though many say it stands independent of what came
before I think someone familiar with the TV series or the other films will
appreciate it much more because they know what happened/happens to these
characters.

All the actors are more
than competent and most will make a living from being their characters in future
films, at fairs or just from having been in this film. All in all Nimroy (who appears in this picture) and
Shatner (who doesn't) have had
separate careers and have done well but they have also made a great living just
from their being in Star Trek.

Those who like this sort of film will like this
film, those who don't, won't. In the long run I belong to the latter
group.
