My first 3 days in New York and I had a trifecta with Torch Song Trilogy, Dreamgirls ("And I Am Telling You" breath taking) and, of course, the smash presentation of the longest running show in Broadway history A Chorus Line.
On Friday we spent the afternoon in the Village and I was spending money like a drunken sailor buying a recording of ACL for John, an ACL coffee cup for Dr. K, book for Chuck & Tommie, cards for Bill, etc.
Met
Buzz and Richard, friend's of Dr. K. He and John went out to their home
in New Jersey after Bob. K., John, Tommie, Chuck, Bill and I went to
see ACL. Afterwards we went to the Gaiety for dinner.
For the first, and last, time I was let down seeing ACL but I had expected that, knowing after Thursday's performance, that it
was inevitable that the next time I saw it would be a bit of a
disappointment.
On Saturday Bill, Chuck, Tommie and I went to the first matinee performance of the newest Broadway hit, La Cage aux Folles and, once again, I was stunned in a theatre. I had thought the first act curtain with the song "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going" was one of the powerhouse curtain songs I had ever heard but hearing George Hearn sing, and act, "I Am Who I Am" and then stalk off the stage at the end
of act one in La Cage was electrifying and left me in tears.
Afterwards
we had lunch at Beanstalks and that evening dinner at Keanes. Bill and
Chuck went to the Village while Sue, once again, picked me up in a limo
and we went to The Polo bar where I talked to Sue's friend, Bob, who
played the piano there and he introduced me to Hugh, senior banquet
manager at the Waldorf Astoria.
On
Sunday we all had brunch at One Fifth Avenue which was a little
uncomfortable as Chuck and Tommie had obviously had a huge fight
regarding Chuck's going to the Village the night before. After brunch
they left for the airport and Bill and I walked around the Village for
a couple of hours--I could walk back then!!--and then we were off to
the airport and back to Fort Lauderdale.
I would go back to New York for the last time in 1985 at which time I would see 3 more performances of ACL at the Shubert theatre but I would/will never forget September 29, 1983--a most memorable day in a memorable week!
