Helen Mirren is far from being the Queen of England in the movie "Red" but she is a
hoot as an 'old, still sexy broad' doing all sorts of mayhem with
weapons standing side by side with the 'old' guys, all 'Retired Extremely Dangerous'
CIA agents. Of all the actors in the film she looks like she is having
the most fun while Mary Louise Parker, in spite of having duct tape over
her mouth and being handcuffed to a bed, also seems to be enjoying
herself.
Most
of the actors are old pros and have fun playing with their screen
images and doing take offs of other films. Bruce Willis, as Frank
Moses, finds himself in retirement, tearing up his retirement checks so
he can talk to Mary-Louise Parker, once a month, who he eventually
kidnaps when he finds out that his ex-employer, the CIA, is trying to
have him assassinated and because for her connection to him she is in danger.
Frank gets his rretired team-mates together to help him out. There is Morgan Freeman, dying of cancer in a retirement home, John Malkovich, not as crazy as usual but still crazy, who was on LSD everyday for years, Helen Mirren,
making flower arrangements for her home, cooking fancy meals and every
once in awhile takes a 'job' when she gets bored. Keeping the old folks
theme we have Ernest Borgnine as a record keeper, Brian Cox, a Russian who was Helen's lover until
she shot him. The logic among these old folks is that she sot him in the
chest, not the head, because she didn't want him to die. Richard Dreyfuss is one, just one, of the bad guys.
This is just a fun movie with Malkovich hitting a missile, like a baseball, back at his attacker and then there
is a gunfight at OK Corral scene with modern weapons not to forget
Helen having a blast shooting off am automatic weapon and the audience
gasps when she gets shot but, remember, this is a comedy. The director,
Robert Scwentke, and the screenwriters, Jon and Eric Hoeber, could have made it funnier and Mirren, along with Parker bring a lot of humor to the script when it isn't there.
Go to this movie, sit back in your seat, relax and enjoy.
