Just as the title of the movie doesn't make sense nor the fact
that you don't hear the 'James Bond Theme Music' until the end of the movie
there is a lot about this movie that doesn't make sense including some of the
story and the fact that in most of the punishing hand to hand combat with all
its falls and crashes no one breaks an arm or leg! Okay, so we suspend belief
when seeing an action film but there is too much that is wrong with this
film.
Most Bond films have a couple of laugh out loud sophisticated
lines but there are only two minor giggles here. The whole take off on the
martini aspect of James Bond falls completely flat. The usual Bond women are far
from the usual Bond women and not in a good way.
The ONE saving factor in this movie is Daniel Craig with a good
assist from Judi Dench. He looks great and sexy in or out of a tuxedo, whether
in white pants or bare chested and those blue/green eyes are screen
perfect.
It seems everything is just a bit off about this Bond caper.
There are the plush hotels, the speedboats and yachts, the chases by planes,
cars and on foot just as there are new spy gimmicks. Of course there is the
villain and world domination just as there are the elegant clothes and to die
for parties. The problem with it all is that each seems a tame remake from a
previous Bond film. The only scenes that seem to have any substance and seem
fresh are those between Craig and Dench.
Without Craig this would be a very minor film in the Bond series
but he does bring it up quite a few notches and will (just judging by the size
of this matinee's audience) probably be the number one film this weekend and a
top grosser for the year.
It's time to bring the fun and excitement back to the series and
have Craig do a little less brooding and anger--also it wouldn't hurt to have
him show a little more skin, get more stunning and lethal female spies and come
up with better gadgetry!
