Watercooler: Lesbian sent to “fake prom”
04.06.2010 1:39pm EDT ,

controversy season – the traditional precursor to Pride season –
continues to offer all the drama of daytime TV, high school-style.
Friday evening, Itawamba Agricultural High School held its
parent-coordinated, super-not-so-secret prom for this year’s graduating
class. Of course, Constance McMillen, the lesbian who brought attention
to the school when they denied her the right to bring a girlfriend to
prom, was not invited. Her prom, which she termed a “fake prom” in an
interview with The Advocate, included 5 other students in addition
to her and her date.
“They had two proms and I was only
invited to one of them,” McMillen told The Advocate . “The one that I went to had seven
people there, and everyone went to the other one I wasn’t invited to.”
The fake prom was held at a Fulton, Miss., country club and was
chaperoned by a handful of school officials and considered the official
school event.
McMillen said she asked a fellow student for
details about the parent-organized prom and was told to go to the
country club event.
One bright side to the event, which
McMillen noted, was two students with learning disabilities who had the
times of their lives at the fake prom. It’s unclear whether the two were
invited to the other event.

Queens’
frontman Freddie Mercury’s home is one the market, New
York magazine reports. While the interior is slightly different
from when the flamboyant rocker lived in the Midtown East apartment, the
view that convinced him to buy the place is as breath-taking as ever.
And it’s all yours, for a cool $4.35 million. Apparently, when Mercury
lived in the three bedroom, four-and-a-half bath New York apartment , it was decorated with floor to ceiling mirrors and silver-gray satin
walls. ‘80s opulence, anyone?

Women in
Portland, Maine, marched through the streets topless last weekend.
Apparently, shirts are optional for women in Maine , so no laws
were broken.
The protest was to call attention to the fact
that topless women should not attract attention.
Yeah. Read
that again. I’m not sure who thought through this protest.
Event
organizer Ty MacDowell told reporters she was surprised by all the men
with cameras. “I’m really upset by the men… all the men that are here,
just like watching it like it’s a parade.”
Wow.

Caster
Semenya is in the news again. My heart breaks for this woman. Her
passion is running, and a little biology is keeping her off the
competitive track. Semenya is the record-setting, gold-medal-winning South African runner who gender is disputed by international athletes.
She’s been blocked from racing since the “scandal” began last summer in
Berlin at the world championships. The 19-year-old announced Tuesday she
plans to return to competition in June in Spain, at which time gender
test results should be completed and released. You go, girl!
Outrage
factor: Did you know no man has ever been tested for gender in athletic
competition?

And,
finally, a dose of faux news that I wish was true: Reports of a
ban on marriage for people who don’t love each other, care of The Onion.
