Watercooler: A new gay bishop; Rekers keeps lying

- Second Sucuzhanay defendant gets a mistrial. Suspect Keith
Phoenix’s trial ended with a hung jury on May 11.
The defendant is accused of being involved in the 2008 death of José Sucuzhanay.
The DA claims Phoenix and Hakim
Scott–found guilty of first-degree manslaughter and attempted
assault in early May–attacked Sucuzhanay and his brother because they assumed
the two were a gay couple. Both men were walking close to stay warm. The new
trial is set for June 15.

- Asking for apologies is tired. Yes Ramin Setoodeh wrote an illogical article on gay/straight actors
for Newsweek. Sure his attempts to explain himself make the original piece even
crazier; however, does GLAAD really need an apology from the publication. Really?
Why?

- A ’mo trying to dig himself out of a hole. Here is George Alan Rekers, shoveling his travel companion defense to a
reporter. Take from the conversation what you will. Rekers is the same guy who
wrote a book with the below cover. That’s enough info for me.

- Pat
Buchanan plays the race card. Having issues with Supreme Count
nominee Elena
Kagan is all good; however, if you fume about her religion, then
it’s time to remove yourself from decent company. Racial hysteria has been Pat
Buchanan’s calling card for his entire public career. His continued presence on
mainstream news outlets is rather shocking.

- Happy International Day Against
Homophobia. Sure there’s no Hallmark card, but May 17 is
International Day Against Homophobia. Find the most attractive guy, or woman,
you know and give him/her a big smooch on the lips. It will give your fundie
friends fits.

- Congratulations to Mary Glasspool. While we are in a
celebratory mood, let’s give a shout out to Rev. Mary
Glasspool, the first open lesbian to be consecrated as a Episcopal
Church bishop. Predictably her more conservative peers are having a fit, but
from all accounts Glasspool, who has been partnered for 19 years, is more than
deserving of this honor and responsibility.

- What’s the problem? At Queerty a big argument erupted over a quote from Sharon Lettman, executive director of
the National Black Justice
Coalition. Don’t see why people were put out. Here is what she said
at a NAACP panel. Sounds spot on, but I guess good sense counts for little in
this post Prop
8 world. “People wanted to say that (gay is the new black) came
from the white gay movement, and it was provocative. OK, but you didn’t have
anybody from the white gay movement on the panel. So to me it wasn’t relevant. I
didn’t want to be on a panel at the NAACP when I represent the black LGBT
movement, and be beating up on the white gay movement. We were pointing a big
finger outside the room, when there was a big finger that needed to be pointed
within the room. I say empower the black gay community and let them have the
power to know that we have the backing of the greater black community. And then
we can go to the white gay movement as an empowered community with a strong
constituency behind us, and we will be a critical part of the
movement.”
