Nana's Original Stromboli--a 'Find'--restaurant

I
really don't want to review Nana's Stromboli because I will have to
tell you what a gem it is and the next time I go there I will have to
wait on line to get my lunch.

First
many people don't know what a Stromboli is and when asked I usually
describe it as a rolled up pizza while at Nana's web site
(nanasoriginalstromboli.com) describes it as, "...a hand rolled baked
dough stuffed with a selection of fresh meats, vegetables and cheese."

Nana's
off the beaten path, east of Federal Highway, south of 45th Street, in a
nondescript shopping strip and though I would describe it as a 'hole in
the wall' the food that comes out of the kitchen in the rear is
dynamite. When you enter you face the counter where you put in your
order and to the left is a ledge with 5-6 chic black stools where you
can sit down and eat or wait for your order to go. Outside is a small
table with two chairs for eating, smoking and/or waiting. What the
customer sees is a well appointed area of marble and 'ancient' colors. This is far from a 'hole in the wall.'

Nana's
is neither a fast food or service restaurant. I don't know but I will
assume they do a great catering business plus getting a heavy to go
lunch crowd from the businesses all around. They do tell you that
'Everyday'--6 different ones--Stromboli specials takes 12 minutes to
bake and made to order Stromboli's take 25 minutes. As far as I can tell
there are about 20 different ones. Their regular menu has salads,
antipasto and breadsticks. They also have a 'Hors D'oeuvre' catering
menu with items ranging from lump crab balls, stuffed fried olives to
empanadas, all in all 25 different cold and hot item trays.

They
have 2 specials every afternoon the first being a 'buy 1 get 1 free'
coupon on their to go menu and another consisting of a Stromboli, a
salad and a cannoli for dessert. I came across a newspaper special on
the Internet consisting of 2 Strombolis, 2 salads and 2 cannolis for a
total of $7.50 plus tax. Their drink prices are every reasonable such as
sodas being $1.25.

We
did have a little hard time finding the place because we came from the
opposite direction as suggested on their map and as we approached the
place I was a little apprehensive. When we walked in we were greeted
warmly, our order taken and the salads and drinks served quickly. Okay,
here comes the snob in me as I was surprised the salads were served on
China plates and not paper plates! The mixed salad greens were
prepackaged but they added sliced tomatoes, raw onion rings, black
olives and croutons with a good vinaigrette dressing.

I had the original stromboli consisting of pepperoni, salami, ham, green peppers and mozzarella served with marinara that was just the right touch, made the right way. The Stromboli was one, if not the one, best I have ever had. The dough was crisp all the way through. Allen had the special one that day which was a pulled pork and cheese served with the marinara sauce and a bbq sauce. He much preferred the former and raved even more than I did about the Stromboli.

For dessert we had the minature cannoli made with ricotta cheese in a pastry shell with chocolate chips on each end---it was so good I ate half of it before I remembered to take a picture! lol

Not only was it a good money deal, and
worth more than the price, but it was one of the best tasting lunches we
had in a long time.
