As most of you know I am and have always been a BIG movie fan since as far back as I can remember--I remember running from school to make the 3 PM showings at the RKO Pelham, Fordham, Lowe's Paradise and the Globe theatre--and remember those were the days when you saw 2 features, a newsreel, cartoon and coming attractions for something like 25 cents!!
I believe movies should been seen in a theatre which is what they were made for--I did at one time own over 500 movie videos but they were mainly movies that I had seen and knew that I would watch again and again.
Then about3-4 years ago I decided to get rid of 'stuff' and sold most of the movie collection I had on e-bay--and did very well.
Since then I have bought about 15 DVDs--of which 3 were ones I didn't see in movies mainly because 1) they weren't shown on the big screen or 2) they were 'special' such as Elaine Stritch's one woman show "At Liberty" that she did on Broadway and won a Tony for--you really should see it--and "Aileen: Life and Death of a Serial Killer" which is a documentary about Aileen Wuornos which was made into a movie "Monster" for which Charlize Theron won a very deserved Oscar for--she gave a monumental performance, one of the best ever given on screen by any actress, which is even more amazing after you see the documentary!
The other DVDs I have are: "Boys Don't Cry"--a true heartbreaking story starring Hillary swank for which she won her first Oscar.---"Life With Judy Garland: Me and My Shadows" with a mesmerizing performance, for which she won an Emmy, by Judy Davis who is superb--"A Beautiful Mind", another true story, for which Russell Crowe was robbed of an Oscar--"The Big Knife"--one of my favorite movies from the 50s with excellent performances by Jack Palance, Ida Lupino, Shelley Winters and a real hammy bit effective one by Rod Steiger--both "Dreamgirls" and "Chicago" which are the best movie musicals made in years--"Angels In America" which is a MUST SEE--"Sordid Lives"--hilarious--as it says 'a black comedy about white trash--funny, funny, funny--"Running On Empty"--a little known film starring Christine Lahti, Judd Hirsch and River Phoenix about a family on the run and what it does to the son--"Vera Drake"--Imelda Staunton plays a mother, wife and back street abortionist--I didn't see this in the theatres and don't think it will ever be shown on TV--"Stage Beauty"--a film that came and went so fast I didn't get to see it--with Billy Crudup and Claire Danes--it takes place in the 17th century when men played the women's roles on stage and change was about to take place--last, but certainly not least, "De-Lovely"--Kevin Kline--based on Cole Porter's life--his wife Linda never stopped being his muse in spite of his affairs with men--and the music!!!
