... The Morgans?--a Movie Review & Jennifer Jon

Jennifer
Jones, who starred in one of the most romantic movies ever made, "Love
Is A Many Splendored Thing", died yesterday at the age of 90. She was
nominated for the Oscar five times and won for her performance in 'The
Song Of Bernadette". I was a big fan of hers.

*************************************************************

"Did
You Hear About The Morgans?" is the full title of the film but is being
referred to just as The Morgans. I have an idea for a movie--have a
married couple, recently separated because he cheated, and like fish
out of water, since they are sophisticated people, put them in Wyoming.
Yes it is as old hat as it sounds but not as bad as it could have been.
While there are no laugh out loud moments in  the movie there are quite
a few smiles, even if they are familiar.

Romantic
comedies like this live or die on the leads and their chemistry or lack
of same. There is some chemistry between Sarah Jessica parker and Hugh
Grant but not enough. Grant still has the boyish charm that has kept
him a star for more than a few years and puts all the grins, sly looks
and English spin on his character to be effective in his role.

I
am not a fan of Sarah Jessica Parker. I do not find her to have any
substance as an actress, her face is off kilter, not in a good way,
plus she is way too skinny for me and she is not Carrie Bradshaw
anymore. A stronger actress, like a Jennifer Aniston or Sandra Bullock,
could have made more out of the role and supplied that something extra
to make this film a cut above the others.

The
supporting cast are strong from Mary Steenburgan and Sam Elliott as
wife and husband, supposedly hicks but smarter than the city sleekers,
to Wilford Brimley and assorted town people.

I
have just started to list the over 70 films I have seen this year and
how I rated them. The Morgans certainly won't be on the best/must see
list but neither will it be on the worst/blah/don't see list. It is a
pleasant movie with a few smiles and a good way to spend a rainy
afternoon as we had in Fort Lauderdale today and, to my surprise, had
more people in the audience than the Avatar had at the same time
showing!
