Miami, Not Hair

Watching
"Hair" I thought back to the cast in 1968 when I saw it on Broadway--43
years ago!! Those 'hippies' are now probably collecting social security
and showing pictures of their grand-kids. It was funny watching some of
the older audience who came dressed as hippies of yore and yet I didn't
see one of them get up on stage when the audience was invited for the
finale of "When The Sun Shines In". Talking about that it was fun to see
kids--and I mean kids--8-16 in the audience and running up to be on the
stage.

I
can suspend belief in the theatre but the lead, Steel Burkhardt, and I
looked all over the Internet for his real age, looked too old to be in
high school--well kicked out of high school--let alone be around the
same age as the rest of the cast. I will say had a body to die for and
energy up the kazoo! With all that he didn't really seem to connect with
Claude or the audience.

The
main difference between the 1968 show and the revival is that back then
songs of sodomy, nudity on stage, threesomes and white girls singing
about how delicious black men are and black girls talking about how
sweet white men are, guys burning their draft cards and a woman being a
man were shocking--not today!

We
were concerned about the traffic situation because the first
Heat/Maverick basketball game was taking place in the American Airlines
Stadium 4 blocks away--it is the building on the right with the red
billboard and I am standing in front of the theatre on the
sidewalk---but it wasn't a problem as the game didn't start until 9 and
we had to be at the theatre by 7 while the show was over at 10:30 and
the game didn't end to midnight.

On
the right is the front of the theatre--those are balconies on the left
with the blue background. On the right is the old Sears Tower that was a
landmark in Miami and had to be Incorporated into the theatre design.

On
the left, though it is hard to see, is a waterfall wall in the
courtyard of the theatre and on the right the cast of "Hair" and
understudies who went on--none were leads.

This
is a building across from the theatre that intrigues, mainly how the
balconies are set up to fight the winds from the east though you really
don't see them here.

Allen                                                             Yours truly

Last,
but certainly not least, you can read my review of "Hair" at

You look marvelous! I'll bet those naked hippies in the original musical 43 years ago didn't have tattoos like we see on young and no so young folks these days.

Actually the hippies were into tattoos--not as many per person as today!
