Judge against anti-gay message

April 29, 2008 04:29am

THE church's teachings continue to be a cause of hatred and prejudice against the homosexual community, outspoken High Court judge Michael Kirby said.

The comments came yesterday in Sydney as Justice Kirby addressed a light-hearted forum on ageing and ageism in the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) community, calling on members to lobby against inequality and prejudice.

"A lot of the prejudice that still exists ... comes from religion ... handing out messages of hate," Justice Kirby said.

"Things written four or five thousand years ago are the cause of a lot of hatred out there. It has to change. I don't know how it will change but it has to change."

A panel including gay and lesbian activists, health specialists and a transsexual entertainer discussed the importance of community tolerance and understanding on GLBT aged care.

More than 200 people attended the forum, titled Ageing Disgracefully, which aimed to provide a greater understanding about health and wellbeing issues confronting older GLBT people.

Inequality is one of the greatest problems the GLBT community faces in its struggle for aged care provision and those affected must be vocal, Justice Kirby, 69, said.

"It's very important that we pay tribute to the people who have got off their bum and lobbied," he said.

"As I grow older disgracefully I hope I will never lose that fire of protest."

Justice Kirby said he lives in "a world which is overwhelmingly a straight world", and that most law reforms are made by heterosexual people, but that he is constantly making people "confront their demons".

"If I were to perish tonight ... my partner ... would get nothing, although he's been with me for 39 years. Whereas if he were a wife or a girlfriend he would get a full judicial (pension) which is no small bickies," he said.

Justice Kirby said he hoped the recognition of gay partners would change for the better under the new Federal Government.

"We live in a free society, it's always changing, but we have got to give it a bit of a push," he said.

When you discriminate nobody wins...it's just wrong.

With so much attention given to gay parties, celebrations, and events in Australia it is easy to assume all is "all right with the world" there. The real situation at hand can not often be seen or sensed through all that seems so positive, but the truth does manage to make it to the surface sometimes. You, Martin, have helped to get that truth out for others to see! It's not good news to share, but it's news that needs to be shared. People everywhere have the right to know and should know the truth.

Okay here's my problem with the judgmental people of the world who stand on religion: I'm a spiritual person, but not a religious one...except for shabbat and the feasts, you know what I mean. I have a good relationship with God and with Yeshua. I'm happy where I am, but Yeshua taught very specifically "Judge not lest ye be judged for with what measure you judge other people, you shall be judged!" WOW! Do you know how overwhelming that is! He said we are NOT the ones to judge, because we'll be judged the same way. These people need to re-read that verse about 1000 times -- but no, stupid people like that never get it. They cling to their beliefs and don't worry about getting it right themselves. You know they are so quick to condemn someone for being gay, but what about those of THEM who are having torrid affairs or into child porn or lying and cheating etc. etc. No, they want to judge you, but they forget 3 fingers point back at them every time they point at you. Personally, I love gay people -- never met one I didn't like(except for a really nasty friend of my best friend Jim -- even Jim called him a raving queen.) I will stand up and say that's who I am!

"Most of us hate anything that we don't understand." - Kris Kristofferson
The with religions that hate is that they don't want to find out the truth! They close their eyes and their ears because it's simpler that way. "Don't confuse me with the facts; my mind's made up!"
I often wonder what they're so afraid of.

There are many worse human rights abuses in Australia. Michael Kirby is correct, but like us, he and his partner have made provision for each other. And in the case of pensions, it is advantageous not to be a legally recognised partnership. both can receive the single pension which is far more than the married one. The truly disgusting thing is that Aboriginal Australians had half their wages stolen from them right up until the 1970's by the government who said they would 'look after it for them and give them it back with interest when they needed it to buy a house etc. Well, the government is now refusing to return the money. some claimants are owed $200,000... but the government says too bad... it was used by previous governments for other purposes -- like building roads and hospitals for whites... that sort of racist treatment is far worse than gays receive today, but Australians are basically racist and don't care.

We must give it a shove! It really isn't fair, and should be changed immediately, here there and everywhere. How can we have equality when we discriminate against any group? We can't.
