Imagine a Bette Davis movie where she is
a manipulative sibling, coming between two men so she can have the one
she wants and be in control--"Between Love and Goodbye" is that movie
with a few changes such as Bette Davis is not in it or are any of the actors up to her ability.
In
this movie the two men are lovers living in NYC. Marcel is French who
marries Sarah, a lesbian, in order to become a U. S. citizen and his
mother flies in from France to attend the wedding knowing that her son
is in love with Kyle and will be living with him. It is Kyle's sibling
who plays the Bette Davis role and the sibling is a transgender who has shifted between the roles of male and female a few times. In
half the picture she is April, in the other half he is Cole. It may
sound confusing but it really isn't.
The
siblings, at ages 4 and 6, saw their mother commit suicide and since
then Kyle has taken care of April/Cole. April, being a prostitute in
order to make a living and get breast implants, and Kyle have been on
the outs for awhile but she comes back into his life when Kyle and
Marcel move in together.
First as
April, and then as Cole, she does whatever she can to separate Kyle and
Marcel and succeeds as Kyle can't see what his sibling is doing.
The title refers to that period of time between discovering that you love someone and falling out of love--maybe.
One
can see what April/Cole is planning to do and it heads in that
direction except for the last minute which is a complete downer and
very much 'Hollywood'.
This film was a
lot better than I expected it to be, possibly because I don't have high
standards for gay themed films that are written, directed and produced
by the same person.
The acting, and a
lot of the photography, are amateurish while some of the musical
numbers had very appropriate lyrics and carried the story along.
It
is far from being a great movie but it certainly is better than the
few 'gay' movies I have seen recently and it does hold one's interest. Now if only Bette Davis was alive and played the Cole/April role!!! LOL
