Looking at the New Playhouse

The
first time I ever went to the Caldwell Playhouse was in 1979 when they
were in a storefront in a mall in Boca Raton. For the next 20 years
though I (we--Robert & James) didn't get subscriptions I would go
there very often as they did a lot of gay themed plays such as "Bent",
"The Normal Heart", "Take Me Out"
plus the latest off-Broadway plays and occasional music revues.

Their
next move was a few miles north to a building in the Levitz shopping
center where they built a theatre that brought in a lot of subscribers
and catered to the elite of the area in addition to the students at FAU
and the residents in surrounding condos. I would continue going there
until 2000 when my money dried up---AGAIN!

As
I posted previously I entered the 'free night of theater' that takes
place around the country every year and I won 2 tickets to see "After
The Revolution" at the recently opened new Caldwell Playhouse. It was a
little difficult to find due to the site and surrounding darkness. Also,
right now the choice of restaurants near the theatre are limited but
that will change.

The
new theatre is comfortable with a lavish lobby and, as they have done
since the mall days, they have framed and hung up scenes from every play
they have done.

The
auditorium has excellent sight lines, good acoustics and is small
enough for intimate plays but still large enough for the artistic
director to get newer plays/hits, premiere new plays, have readings and
workshops. Unless they come down in their prices it looks like I won't
get back there until next year's 'free night at the theatre.'

Would
have been a better evening if we had found the place we wanted to eat
open or a better restaurant nearby not to mention if the play was better
but I love going to the theatre, seeing the house lights go down and
the curtain coming up!
