Four movies
opened today and by process of elimination we decided to go see "Just
Wright". Allen had no desire to see "Robin Hood" and neither did I.
After seeing the last 3 movies of Amanda Seyfried I am definitely NOT a fan of hers though I did/do like
her in "Big Love" so that eliminated "Letters to Juliet". Last, but not
least, is/was "Harry Brown" starring Michael Caine who I am a big fan of but
decided to see that on Tuesday.
We both like
Queen Latifah and were in the mood for something light and this seemed
to fit the bill. Full disclosure: I had helped to wait on Queen when
she came into the Crabhouse,
where I was working , with her family for dinner and she wasn't a bad
tipper! Seriously, I have always enjoyed watching her perform whether it
was singing, hosting the People's Choice awards, doing guest
appearances on sit-coms or
starring in serious TV movies or Hollywood movies along with her
comedies.
I was/am not familiar Common who I believe
was a hip hop and/or rap singer. He is a good looking, muscular actor
but not quite a leading man yet. There is chemistry between Queen and
Common but more of being siblings than lovers which isn't good for a
romantic comedy.
This movie is basically a show case for Queen Latifah who really doesn't need
one at this point. She comes across as the charismatic, funny, warm
person she is allowing space for all the actors to shine when they are
'on'.
There is nothing 'wrong'
with this movie but at the same time nothing special to recommend it.
Everyone and everything in the film glows including the New York and
New Jersey scenes. I always smile when I see
a film that takes place in Manhattan and the characters always finds a
parking spot when they need one and there are no signs of alternate
street parking--only in the cinema!!!
