Daniel Radcliffe aka Harry
Potter probably doesn't have to work another day in his life yet he is
on Broadway knocking himself out singing, dancing and acting with an
American accent! There is almost a 100% certainty I will not ever see him on stage but I did last night on the Tony Awards!
I watched Neil Patrick Harris do a 6 minute opening number setting an exuberant mood for what would be a fast paced 3 hour show that sped by and included a show stopping number with Hugh Jackman and pulled off an ending that still amazes me. Lin-Manual Miranda wrote
a rap song describing what had taken place on the stage for 3 hours and
Harris sang it both doing it all in, maybe, 5 minutes and it worked!
This
was one of the best Tony Award shows in many a year. I can't afford to
go to New York anymore so many of the people I saw are people I just
heard of but don't know such as the best musical actor winner Norbert
Leo Butz and will probably never see him perform in person and who is Mark Rylance? Will he be touring in a show in the South? I doubt it.
For
whatever reason it is annoying, (jealousy?), irritating to read theatre
boards and hear them bitching about an acceptance speech or this one
winning or that one not. Some make fun of Nikki M. James and her
bubbling, over the top, sometimes nonsensical thank you speech for her
winning best supporting actress in the musical "Book of Mormon" but this
is what we watch the award show for and rejoice in her joy.
I
didn't appreciate New York and Broadway when I lived there and took
going to the theatre for granted--it was something I did. It's been 26
years since I've been to the Big Apple and there is a whole new
generation on stage and yet you hear these 'seasoned' theatre goers who
live there do what I did--take what they have for granted! I want to
shake them and say, "Stop being such smart arses and appreciate what you
are experiencing."
I am sure there is some reason France McDormand wore a 'Walmart' outfit and didn't wash her hair and I bet Whoopie loves her out-sized
hat though what it has to do with her introducing a song number from
"Sister Act" wearing it I have no idea just as I was surprised at Brooke
Shields' 'potty mouth' but that's partially what an award show is about
and what viewers look for.
Yes I can be/get as cynical and
jaded as I want to be but then Larry Kramer will give a very moving
thank you speech reaching out to the current generation of gay people
and I will dissolve in tears and want everyone to read it and very soon
in the future I will share it with all. I watch Sutton Foster moved to
tears because she is losing her dresser/friend of 9 years and you know
actors are people making you smile.
I
have dozen of notes regarding the show but will simply say if you missed
the Tony Awards television show you missed a gem and the joy I feel and
will feel from it for a very long time by watching the YouTube clips pushes that cynicism away for another day!
Was she trying to make a point.Whoppeeeeeewith her hat.
Oh!we guess I can be cynical also.
Yes,though you have seen many Tony's awards that I have.
But this was a very good one and too bad that a lot of people missed it.
Thanks for the post.
