Arnie and I were going to eat at the Natural Chicken Grill but due to a rude employee we walked out and went to Joe's Cafe . For
many years Joe had owned the Belair Diner which was a few blocks away
across from the convention center but when the latter expanded he moved
to this new area. There are quite a few restaurants in this section,
including Duffy's, so he has a lot of competition and I don't know how
good he is doing since he moved . It is a large place but there were only 2 other parties besides us but then it was after lunch hour.
Though
no longer a 'diner' it is now a 'cafe' with a diner's menu. The
selections are never ending but like most places the newest gimmick is
'build a burger'. (Allen and I would come across the same thing the next
day at Smokey Bones!) Being a burger lover I decided to go for it and
had their Angus beef burger platter ($9.95) which starts with the basic
burger and I added blue cheese--that's my new kick as I usually have
cheddar cheese--and ordered string beans instead of fries. It also came
with cole slaw, lettuce, tomato, raw onion and sliced pickle. Comparing
the $13 I paid at ROK:BRGR the week before this was a much better one.
Arnie had a burger ($5.95) with cheese ($.45) and we both had coffee ($1.95).
The
check came to $20.25 plus we left a $4 tip. Turned out the server was
Joe's daughter and she did a good job. All in all one of the better
burgers I have had from the last 4-5 and most a lot more expensive! LOL
Next
door to Joe's is D'Lites an ice cream store so how could we just walk
by? We didn't but should have as their ice cream is quite ordinary,
which isn't to say it is bad but I would rather have had Yomama's!
