Live long and prosper … and
fill out
the Census.
That’s George Takei’s new mission. Takei, who is
known for
his role as Sulu on the original “Star Trek,” and his partner Brad
Altman are
urging folks to gay up the Census.

“It doesn’t matter whether you have a legal marriage license or not,”
Takei
said in a video.
“It
only matters if you consider yourself married. That’s what the Census is
asking
for.”

This is the first time a U.S. Census will count gay Americans. Make sure you
get
counted. Even if you happen to have a propensity for wearing Starfleet
uniforms.

John Barrowman, one of the sexiest men on the face of the planet — and,
yeah,
that’s coming from a lesbian — shares something in common with me. We
both adore
the Capt. Jack Harkness character on BBC’s “Torchwood.”

According to an Entertainment

Weekly
article, the show may be headed to the states for an American
version
of the sci-fi drama. Barrowman’s biggest worry? That the U.S. version
will try
to de-gay his character.

“I hope wherever [the franchise] goes that
the show
stays the same,” the out actor told Entertainment Weekly. “The last
thing I
would want would be for Jack to become this heterosexual, straight hero.
He’s an
omnisexual guy. He likes men, women, aliens, whatever. I think we should

continue going down that route.”

In Keith Olbermann’s
special
comment Monday night, the MSNBC commentator attacked the Tea Party
mentality. He
noted the hypocrisy of the movement. A 16-year-old hijacks a microphone
at
Wal-Mart and tells shoppers all blacks must leave the store. He is
charged with
bias discrimination. But when Tea Party folks shout the N-word at blacks
and the
F-word at gays, no law is broken.

“If racism is not the whole of the tea party, it is in its heart,
along with
blind hatred, a total disinterest in the welfare of others and a
full-flowered,
self-rationalizing refusal to accept the outcomes of elections.”
Olbermann said
Monday night. “On a daily basis, that support comes the racists and
homophobes
of radio and television, the Michael Savages and the Rush Limbaughs.”

I ran across this site recently —
gaymilitarydating.com
and was
blown away. The site appears to have been around for at least five
years. But I
just don’t get it. Isn’t it just asking for a Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell
discharge? I
certainly understand straight military dating sites, but gay ones?
Spokesmen for
the site did not return a request for comment. So, I’m left rather
confused.
Good luck with that one, boys. (The site is boys-only.)

Almost two years after the death of Jesse

Helms, the former North Carolina senator is getting a makeover
.
Meet
the new Jesse Helms: Gay rights advocate. What? You don’t remember that
part?
The Jesse Helms Center Foundation can help. According to the groups Web
site,
“It was Senator Helms who worked most tirelessly to protect the very
principles
of freedom that homosexuals are denied in many other nations.” Um, OK.

The president of the center recently disputed an editorial that
villified
Helms for his role in enacting the HIV travel ban.

According to a story in The New York
Times
, California Assemblyman Tom Ammiano told the paper the Helms
Center
sought to sanitize the record. “It’s spitting on the graves of all the
people
who suffered,” Ammiano said. “He was truly evil and very cavalier about
it. He
should be in the hall of shame.”
