- How did you spend your Fourth? What did you do yesterday?
Watch Rafael
Nadal (what a tasty specimen) win another Wimbledon championship?
Go gaga over some fireworks? Attend a barbecue? Dutifully go over your
Revolutionary War history? I reread Frederick Douglass’ The Meaning of July
Fourth for the Negro, a much needed corrective for all the self
congratulations about American freedom. Also reread parts of Simon Schama’s
elegant Rough
Crossing. Slaves did not put their trust in the liberty words of
the Founding Fathers. Mainly because they knew all of the rhetoric was masked by
the reality of the “peculiar institution. The British, in a cynical move because
they were no abolitionists, offered freedom to slaves who fought against the
colonists. To honor that act, one former slave changed his name to British
Freedom. Go Union Jack

- Another NY pol promises same sex marriage. I love Empire
State politicians. Everyone supports gay marriage, but for some reason it can’t
get passed. Considering how our Albany denizens can’t even pass a state
budget on time, maybe it make sense gay marriage is just a New York
dream. Anyway the state’s Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, also a candidate for governor, says
marriage rights are a priority for him.

- Tony Perkins testifies against Elena Kagan. The
Family Research Council head doesn’t like the Supreme Court
nominee. Sort of shocking.

- Melissa and Tammy are done. In gay celebrity news Melissa Etheridge filed papers on Friday to bring to end her partnership with Tammy Lynn Michaels.
On her blog, Michaels gives her side of the domestic tale. Get out the popcorn. It’s
going to be a juicy public spat fest.

- GHMC has a new home. After searching for over two years,
and being turned down by a few property owners (love “liberal” NYC), the Gay Men’s Health
Crisis has a new home. It will leave its 14 year home at the end of
this year and move to 450 West 33rd Street.

- Gallagher has turned into a cranky homophobe. The watermelon smashing comic has
turned cranky and bigoted over the years. He remains unfunny.

- Reason 241 why summer is the best. Hunky men go
shirtless.
