"Hugo"
was nominated for 8 Oscar awards and won 5 their being for Best; visual
effects, sound editing, sound mixing, art direction and cinematography,
deservedly. They lost for Best Director, Picture and adapted
screenplay, also deservedly.
Martin
Scorsese is known for all the time, effort and money he has put into
restoring/preserving old movies and you can tell from the poster for
"Hugo", a play on Harold Lloyd's hanging from a clock in "Safety First"
made in 1922.
The story is about Hugo, an orphan, living behind
the walls of a train station in 1930s Paris; he stays alive by filtering
croissants and machine gadgets and hopes to uncover a message from his
dead father in an automated machine looking like a man. He's helped by a
young lady both being pursued by the station's Inspector and there is a
connection to the lady's uncle and aunt.
The film runs a little
over 2 hours that could be cut by an hour but then you would not see all
the reasons for winning 5 Oscars though you do see the reasons why they
lost the 3 others and why there weren't any acting nomination.
I want EVERY movie to be a winner but this doesn't come anywhere near to being one.
