Hereafter---a Movie Review

The
good news is that "Hereafter" is not a bad movie--the bad news is that
"Hereafter" is not a good movie. As with most of Eastwood's movies it
runs too long, over two hours, and moves too slow but here he has gone
Hollywood with a computer generated tsunami and a surprisingly, added
nothing to the movie, decidedly happily ever after Hollywood ending!

Has
Clint Eastwood, now that he is in his 89s, started to wonder what
happens when life is over? In this film, very non-religious, he is
looking at reports of people who having gone through near death
experiences 'seeing light' and shadows of people.

The
three main story lines concerns  a 12 year old boy who loses his
brother, his twin, to a horrible car accident, a TV investigative
reporter who survives the tsunami and a troubled psychic who walks away
from his gift finding it too much of a burden to bear.

As
in most of Clint Eastwood's movies the performances are first rate and
show the actors as real people. The 12 year old boy is played by twin
brothers George  and Frankie NcLaren while Belgian actress makes her very impressive Hollywood movie debut
as the reporter. There is a side story of a possible love interest for
the troubled psychic to help him lead a normal life with the girl played
by Bryce Dallas Howard adding an interest segment to the film.

Matt
Damon brings in his sweet, everyman, gentle strength to the role of
George Lonegan the troubled psychic making his 'gift' believable to the
audience along with his reaching out to those who need him.

Jay Mohr plays Damon's brother and Richard Kind the former's friend while Marthe Keller becomes a believer in the hereafter.

The
film might lead to a 5 minute conversation about what happens after you
die but 10 minutes later the conversation and the film will be
forgotten.

I read about the movie and wondered the same thing. I guess all of us
wonder about walking over the threshold of life when we have survived a
long time.
