Catholics support gay rights
Our Lady of Tolerance
A recent
poll
revealed that the majority of American Catholics support equal rights for
gays and lesbians. A rep from the firm that conducted the poll said,
“Gay-marriage has clearly become another issue, along with artificial
contraception and divorce and remarriage, which Catholics believe is not core to
what it means to be Catholic.” If only they’d add “making teenagers wear humiliating
uniforms ” to that list…

A Different Kind of Bank
A lesbian couple in England has
opened the first sperm bank designed to cater specifically to the needs of gay
couples. The women have been warned that, while they’re welcome to market TO
gays, they can’t turn away opposite-sex couples, which sounds totally fair to
me. It’s just nice to know there’s a gay-friendly place to get…uh…ingredients .

No Room at the Inn
A gay couple claims that they were denied a room at a hotel in Fairfax, Virginia, because of
their sexual orientation. When Russell Williams, 56, called to make a
reservation at Stafford
House , the owner “ascertained” that he was gay and allegedly said, “Well,
we don’t accept non-traditional couples.”
The most interesting part of this story is that it all went down a couple
blocks away from my high school . What? That’s not the most interesting part of the story to you? Weird.
Bigotry? There’s an App For That.
Earlier this week, 365gay
reported that everyone’s favorite ex-gay organization, Exodus International,
had created a so-called “gay cure” iPhone app. Well, in response to a petition
signed by 145,000 people, Apple has pulled
that app from iTunes.
Opponents of the application claim that it’s “hateful and bigoted” but Exodus
claims they’re misunderstood. They just want to “provide support for individuals
who want to recover from homosexuality.” Nice try. The only think you guys want
to provide is a one-way ticket to Self-Loathing-Ville.
Not Funny
Former SNL star Victoria Jackson went on
“Showbiz Tonight” to tell the world how grossed out she was by the recent gay kiss on Glee. The
comedienne dropped such pearls of wisdom as “['Glee' is] trying to make kids
gay” and “Muslims kill gays.” On a personal note, I find this story more
disheartening than the average, run-of-the-mill
person-speaks-out-against-gays-on-TV story. As a professional comedy writer and
performer, I looked up to Victoria Jackson as a kid and was totally inspired by
her offbeat, quirky humor (remember when she played the ukulele? When she did a
handstand dressed as a Christmas tree ??). I’m
sorry to learn that her off-screen self leaves less to be admired. I’m hoping
this is all part of some elaborate, Andy-Kaufman-esque
sketch.

candidate

Fred Karger (R.) has announced he is running for the 2012 Republican
nomination for president.
Fred Karger (R.) has announced he is running for the 2012 Republican
nomination for president.

Karger is the first openly gay presidential
candidate in the U.S. When CBS correspondent Nancy Cordes asked why he would run
for a party that has historically opposed gays, he responded, “Being a gay
Republicans is kind of an oxymoron,” but “I have been a fighter in my party, I
have always been on the more moderate side but I’m also a protégé of Lee
Atwater. We need to open up this party and that’s one of my reasons for running.
The party should not be dominated by one faction or another. It should be open
to all.”
Karger claims that the country needs fresh leadership.
“I want to be a different kind of Republican. The kind of Republican I grew
up with. I consider myself to be Progressive. The last Progressive Republican
president was over 100 years ago; Theodore Roosevelt,” Karger told CBS.
Even though this is Karger’s first time running for political office, he
served as an advisor to presidents Ford, Regan, and George H.W Bush; he has be a
behind-the-scenes player for 35 years.
Karger told CBS, “If I can get in one or more of these presidential debates,
I will make history”.
