June is Gay Pride Month in the nation and
is celebrated constantly, and consistently, throughout Broward County which has one of the largest gay communities and always
rates high as a spot gay people love to vacation. There is a Gay Pride

Singer and Tony-award winning actress, Jennifer Holliday will be headlining the
Main Stage at this year’s Stonewall Street Festival and Parade to be
held on
Sunday, June 20, 2010. Holliday started her career
on Broadway in musicals such as “Dreamgirls” and
later became a successful recording artist. She is best known for her
debut
single, the “Dreamgirls” showstopper and
Grammy-winning R&B/Pop hit, “And I
Am Telling You I’m Not Going.” This is believed to be Jennifer’s first
appearance in a South Florida LGBT pride celebration
The Stonewall Library and Archives is
having an exhibit highlighting Gay Life in Harlem in New York during the
1920s and 1930s.
Few of the artists and writers profiled in
the exhibition can be considered
“out” or “gay” in any modern sense of the terms, organizers say.
Instead, many
led double lives, staying in heterosexual marriages while expressing
their
sexuality through coded references in their work.
There will also be a couple of concerts by The Gay Men's Chorus and
the South Florida Pride Wind Ensemble will present a pops concert.
Yesterday Allen and I went to the Broward County main library to see the United and Proud art exhibit celebrating
Gay Pride presented by ArtsUnited from June 7-25. I
took the pictures throughout this blog but they only
represent a small part of the showing.
The "Celebration of Friends" starts Thursday,
June 24, and runs through the weekend, bringing hundreds of gay men to
the Hilton Hotel on Griffin Road.
Celebrations,
festivals, concerts, exhibits, Jennifer Holliday, etc. All in all
6,000 gay men and women will be coming to Fort Lauderdale the last two weeks of June and you add that to the third largest gay
community in the United States and you know it will be THE party of the
year. Come on and join us--EVERYONE IS WELCOME!!!
