Galanga--a Restaurant Review

It being the second
Wednesday of the new year Allen and I went to our second new restaurant which is
called Galanga's specializing in Thai
and Sushi items. One of the things, many things, that Allen and I have in common
is the dislike of sushi but we have no problem with Thai food.

I had found a 2-4-1 coupon in Hot Spots magazine and
though Galanga's has a been there for awhile we had never been and this seemed
to be a good time, and opportunity, to give it a try. The restaurant is in a
stand alone A frame building with tinted windows.

We entered to find ourselves in a small area and
waited to be seated, and waited, until one of the staff told us to sit wherever
we want so we did. The sushi bar was along the west side of the building with an
impressive fish tank behind the former.

The restaurant was dark,
too dark for lunch time, with dark walls, tables and paintings with some color
added by the painting's lights and the pseudo straw looking chairs.

Pursuing the menu it
seemed a little high priced for lunch but I had a hint of that from the coupon
which in small print said it had a $15 value. The prices ranged from $12 to $25,
more towards the latter price than the former. Allen had his diet coke and I had
my coffee and a glass of water. Service from the beginning was sort of helter skelter. There were two waiters on the floor
serving a party of eight, a four top and about 4-6 deuces. One thing I find
annoying is having to ask for a refill of coffee, finally getting it and the
server not offering the other person a refill of their drink.

We decided to order two
dishes and share so Allen ordered beef with vegetables in a light brown sauce
and I ordered beef in a white pepper and garlic sauce. When the server brought
them we told him to just put them down which he did. Big mistake as we couldn't
tell which was the light sauce and which was the white pepper and garlic sauce!
There hadn't been any silverware on the table so we had to wait until the server
brought us some. The server stopped and asked how the food was and we told him
we couldn't tell the difference in the dishes and though he acted surprised he
didn't (couldn't ?) tell us which was which. By the way the beef in both dishes
while plentiful was not of a particular

good grade. I was glad to see the
plates weren't square, though they were white, as is the  in thing at most
restaurants today.

Upon getting the check, which was for $25.44, I saw
that he hadn't taken the second lunch off, as per coupon, and the two dishes had
been rung up each as Open Food at $10  when the menu had said the price was $14
each. After pointing it out to him he brought us a new check for $14 and change
which included the drinks and tax.

All in all, though the restaurant itself was nicely
appointed, for evening time,  the food, and service was a
disappointment and I don't think we will be going back.
