Setting the record straight this is not
a comedy, this is not a funny movie. Though it is about stand up
comics--and how really they are all sad--even in the night clubs
showing them doing their act there aren't any laughs because they are
just not funny. Using Andy Dick, Ray Romano, Enimen, Sarah Silverman, etc., doesn't help.
I
will admit up front that I am not a fan of Adam Sandler--and this movie
doesn't change that. The fact that his character is completely
unlikable from beginning to end doesn't help. Another fact, that the
leading actress is the wife of the writer and director and therefore
her role seems to be much longer than if this wasn't the case. Also,
her character's story line extends the movie to almost 2 and 1/2 hours
which is way to long and adds a lot of unnecessary screen time.
As Judd Apatow is the writer and director you know there will be a lot of juvenile banter and scenes between
the guys in the movie. You will hear EVERY name for the man's penis
along with way too many, homophobic jokes and references to women's
body parts. There will also be the body fluids being spit out and/or
spoken about. There are so many homosexual acts, scenes, references and
the majority of scenes in the movie are the banter between the male
actors that I felt I was watching a gay movie, and not a good one.
I
enjoyed Apatow's "The 40 Year Old Virgin", and his wife's role in that
film, but here the laughs are gone and the film about comics is boring.
Recently I enjoyed Eric Bana in a movie, though I don't remember the name of it, here his Australian accent is almost undecipherable and his fight with Sandler, and Seth Rogen (a straight 3some?) is childish to the extreme.
Seth Rogers is impressive but he, Jason Schwartzman and Jonah Hill are playing the three stooges without the important
slapstick of that team. There is so much made about how 'big' Seth's
penis is along with how others rate that it is really time for Rogers
to get away from Apatow who certainly must have penis envy. There is a very long, drawn out
scene/montage with Sandler with what I believe is a Schwartzman written
song that is one of the most boring scenes ever in a film.
You think I am talking a lot about penises let me explain it is only a small part of all the talk that actually takes place!
There could have been some redemption if Sandler's character wasn't such a turn off from the beginning to the end of the
film, in spite of the last few minutes. His George Simmons is a
conceited, self centered, extremely successful comedian and yet even the
possibility of facing death doesn't help or change him one bit. The
love story (aside from the one of Sandler's love affair with himself) which comes about half way through the picture doesn't make any sense at all.
It
is said that most comedians want to play Shakespeare, or at least
serious roles, and, yet, when they do they fail of which there are many
examples. AdamSandler fails very badly here and might possibly lose a few fans such as Jim Carey does when he goes 'serious'.
This is a long, boring, unfunny film and should be avoided in all forms!
