The Economy Remains Weak--don't Believe the 'Spin'

'Rising costs for food and energy and higher unemployment pounded consumers and forced some companies to push their own prices higher.'
The Federal Reserve's new snapshot of business conditions, released Wednesday, underscored two big sore spots for the country: listless economic activity coupled with high energy and food prices. Those rising prices carry the risk of both spreading inflation and putting another drag on overall economic growth.
Chafing under price hikes, "consumer spending slowed...as incomes were pinched by rising energy and food prices:, the Fed said. Manufacturing activity, meanwhile, was "generally soft" and the housing market remained stuck in a rut.

"Don't believe the 'spin' you are hearing from Republicans--just look in your pocket," one high placed politician said.

In Florida 18,000--that's 18,000--restaurant jobs will be lost due to the economy within the next month!!!

The money from those checks will mostly go for gasoline, for catching up or getting ahead on utility bills, or maybe for items that people wish to have (but are manufactured by or sold by non-American businesses), so the "boost" to the economy is going where?

Pretty sad. Then they say the stimuls check is helping the
economy. Are they serious.Food and Gas and Utility.
Whats wrong with these people.Got to get rid of the Republican
fast.Does not come soon enough.
Those who got the checks.Spend it on gas and food.
Sure this is helping what choice do they have.
Boy!I hate this person who is running the country.

I don't think that we will see a major turn around anytime soon. I think some of the announcements are meant to halt a panic. Economic behavior can be greatly effected by perception ... almost as much as the reality. That is why nobody, even though on "The West Wing" hated to bandy the word recession around. It is like just saying it can actually help bring it about.
