Ciao--a Movie Review

"Ciao" is a 30 minute movie that runs for 86 minutes and the director doesn't
know when to end a scene, especially those of actors sleeping!! In spite of the
fact that this could have been an interesting film, Yen Tan, the director and
co-writer, doesn't know how to direct, or write, to make a film better, more
interesting, than the basic premise he presents on screen.

This is from a press release:
"Ciao
Drama. A man dies very unexpectedly and leaves behind two
men: Jeff, his best friend and Andrea, an Italian he's been corresponding with
on-line. Jeff informs Andrea of Mark's passing; Andrea writes back to express
his shock and sympathies. On a whim, they continue their correspondence and a
rapport grows between them. They eventually meet, where they extend their e-mail
exchanges into more personal and intimate conversations. They talk about their
respective countries, their jobs, their families, their lives. Mostly, they talk
about Mark. What began as a tragedy that linked two strangers from different
ends of the world becomes a deeply realized friendship that may change their
lives forever. 87 minutes. MPAA Rating: R (for language including sexual
references)."

If only the people behind the scenes had delivered!!
There are two main roles, one supporting role and a few minor roles--the
latter don't make an impression, the actress playing the supporting role is
remembered only because she is the only female with a few lines.

Alessandro Calza, the Italian visitor, is attractive, sexy and leaves an
impression while Adam Neal Smith as the dead man's best friend and ex-lover is
nondescript who you forget two minutes after the film ends and, yet, here and
there shows very brief sparks but not enough.  Charles W. Blaum, who plays the
dead man in flashbacks, just fades into the background.

Like the film is forgettable, and a snooze fest, so are the actors, though I
wouldn't mind seeing more of Alessandro which is where this film also fails.
There were a couple of scenes where nudity was called for but it was as if the
director didn't want to make it a 'gay' film by having his actors nude when it
would have been the most natural thing.
