25th Anniversary of The Phantom of the Opera

This
past weekend they filmed, and showed in movie houses, the live
performance of the 25th anniversary of "The Phantom of the Opera" and
will repeat the film in special engagements.

I
was really looking forward to it as I had been to see the filming of
the live performance of "Company" on Broadway and was excited at seeing a
theatre performance I knew I would not see otherwise. I was looking
forward to a possible announcement that the same thing would be done
with the current production of "Folles" and still hope it will take
place. The auditorium showing "Company" had been full so I rushed to get
a ticket to the Phantom showing and was disappointed to count only 14
people when it started.

In
the past I have seen 3 performances on stage of this show plus the
Gerard Butler starring film version and was always caught up in the
music more than the book. It was also the case here only I was bored
with most of the production. To me the highlight was the encore section
where they brought out the original Christine, Sarah Brightman, and 4 of
the past phantoms to sing the title song. Michael Crawford, the
original phantom, was there and acknowledged by all but he didn't sing.
As he is in another show maybe he didn't have the time to rehearse with
the others. Though all the phantoms were impressive Colm Wilkinson is a
stand out for me.

In
this 25th anniversary production the phantom is played by Ramin Karimbo,
Raoul by Hadly Fraser and Sierra Boggess. The latter was most
impressive with her soaring voice and porcelain looking skin. The men
were also strong in the acting and singing department.

It
won't be long before the DVDs of both this performance, and the
unproduced on Broadway sequel called "Love Never Dies", will be
available. I really want to see more in these theatre series but I would
recommend, which I very rarely do when it comes to film, is that you
wait for the DVD as paying $20-25 for the remaining showings in movie
houses isn't worth spending the money.

FROM THE PRESS RELEASE
"THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA" became the longest running show in Broadway history on 9 January 2006 when it celebrated its 7,486th performance, surpassing the previous
record holder "Cats". This coincided with the Broadway and the US
national touring company celebrating an unprecedented 20,000
performances in the United States. In October 2010 the London production celebrated its 10,000th performance.

"THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA" has won over 60 major theatre awards, including seven Tonys on Broadway and three Olivier Awards in the West End . It won the 'Most Popular Musical Audience Award', voted by the
public, in the 2002 Laurence Olivier Awards. "THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA",
which opened at Her Majesty's Theatre on 9 October 1986 starred Michael Crawford as 'The Phantom' and Sarah Brightman as 'Christine.' It is produced by
Cameron Mackintosh and The Really Useful Theatre Company Limited.

Worldwide, "THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA" has grossed over £3.2 billion. The
box office revenues are higher than any film or stage play in history,
including "Titanic", "ET", "Star Wars" and "Avatar". It has been seen
in 145 cities in 27 countries and played to over 130 million people.

After reading your review, I am glad that I didn't spend the money to see it here. I loved the live production when it first came out. The music and the chandelier especially. Oh, and the way they handled the climbing down into the sewer on the trellis things.

Time flies, doesn't it? The Venetian in Las Vegas built a special theater for their (abbreviated) Phantom production. All the musicals that have come to the Strip had to be shortened because the audience has a short attention span.

Not really--the owners want the patrons out gambling, not watching 2-3 hour shows!

Almost forgot... I thought the motion picture sucked. None of the theatrical experience and excitement. I asked for my money back (didn't expect to get it but they refunded me!!!)

My ex and I saw it about seven times in LA, Hollywood, Orange County CA and once up in S.F. 8 times total. I listen to the tapes I have of the music often. Never got to see Michael Crawford, of course, but most of the lead actors/singers we saw were great. CATS is still my favorite contemporary musical. I only got tickets once but I would happily spend the cash again. Thanks for this post!

I have seen "A Chorus Line" on stage 100 times--guess which is my favorite show?!!? After that comes West Side Story followed by Man Of La Mancha, Carousel and on and on and on!

Eek! I can't imagine enjoying it without the chandelier! I also really loved the feeling of the heat and the fog as it came off the stage during a number of the different scenes.
I am not that young! We got to see it when I was a senior in high school. A friend of mine babysat for someone who sat on the theater's board so we were able to get good tickets cheap through him. I think we had 12th row seats for that one (10th row for Les Miz, and 14th row for Miss Saigon). Alas, we lost that connection.

Nope, just a few sparks come off the chandelier!!!
Ms. Saigon surprised me--wasn't expecting much and I fell in love with it!!! Hasn't toured since that first tour--don't know why--

I really liked this play when I saw the touring version about 26 years ago. I am by no means a theater connoisseur, but I liked it a lot.

I liked it way back then, too---wait a minute--did your mother carry you in on her lap?????--it has a good score and the chandelier dropping added to the production BUT in this one there is no chandelier and the production is old hat--it's worth getting the DVD just to see the 4 tenors at the end!!!
