Stupid Old Man

Lucky that I am alive today
I done a very stupid thing yesterday.
While doing my kitchen work and getting the area cleaned up,starting to make eggplant cutlet. This was fine no problem.
After that was done, then it was time to relax some before my nap.
Lets back up a little.
After the dishes one,no I do not have a dishwasher machine.
I use a sponge. Then I rinsed it off and put it in the microwave for a min or so.This was not the problem yet. Then took Buffy out for his walk and mine.
Watch a little bit of the Chew and then get ready for my nap.
I use the microwave timer and have been using this for years.
Got everything organized and then set the timer and off for my nap.
While napping I smell smoke.I jumped up and saw a light haze of smoke in the bedroom.
I ran around to see whats going on.So ran across the street to get my neighbor Tom and drag him over the house.
What!there is smoke and do not know where it is coming from.
As I walked by the microwave and noticed that the power was out.
Tom open the door and yes,a small explosion happen inside.
What happened that I left the sponge there, but the culprit was when I set my timer for a nap I hit the cook button.
Everything is gone,kaput,no micro.
In the meantime still shaken and open the windows to let the smoke out.
Tom help cleaned up the mess and a mess that it was.
Still shaking about this as this is the first time in my life that I ever had smoke in the house.
Tom left stay a bit.Got my BP monitor and it was sky high for me.180
I sat down for about an hour to get my composure.
The BP was coming down slowly and finally back to normal.
Thought a heart attack was in the making.
The I walked around the house cursing at myself.
You stupid old man, stupid old man, don't you ever do anything right.
Stupid was the word for me yesterday.Stupid,stupid,stupid.
Pay attention you stupid old man.
I send Mike an email told him what happened and ask him to call Tom for all the information that he need to hear.
He did the laundry before coming home.
Told him what happen.
The microwave is dead as we unplugged this.
I must say that lucky that did not get the house on fire.
Still hear in my mind.Stupid Old Man.
Is this the start of something big?hope not.
Now the humor of this,I hated the microwave for it never worked well.
Not the cooking but the timer etc.
Funny how you depend on this.
While having lunch and get ready to make tea and put in the microwave not.
Another stupid move.So used to heat the water for my tea.
But it will be fun buying a new one.
The next time on my license plate:Stupid OM.
Blood pressure normal and life goes on,if I do not watched ti.
Thanks for listening.

Gosh, if I had a quarter for every "stupid" thing that I did, I would be very rich! It is not about being old or stupid. It is about being human, and in real life, sometimes people don't pay attention!

you hit it on the nose.Pay attention of what you are doing.

So glad you only lost the microwave. That can be replaced and it was probably covered by your insurance. Try not to judge yourself too harshly, we all mess up. But no more napping with something on in the kitchen, please!

No details coming, but take my word for it; we all do it! Then important thing is that it turned out Ok and you had a learning experience not a catastrophe.

A very learning experience that it was.Be more careful. As we grow older me the mind react differently.

Microwaves are dangerous tools, Fredo. I don't like them.

Things like this happen all the time to young people. Don't beat yourself
up over this. Give me your recipe for eggplant parmesan.

Fredo you are not stupid. Last weekend I made myself some eggs, fried them in a fry pan on the stove. Later Dakota went to make something and said the burner was still on. he picked up the pan, it's cast iron, and gave himself a good burn. sometimes we are just forgetful or hit the wrong button. glad you are safe.

I know but just used that word and that the first thing comes to my mind.Like be scolded.

I know how you feel. I've burned up/melted two tea kettles after setting the water cooking and then step outside with a bird feeder and then decide to go look at the river, and come back to find the tea kettle boiled dry and glowing hot or melted. There is still a little patch of white enamel on one of the stove burners, a souvenir of the first one. (Now I have an electric one that shuts off automatically.) You've got smoke alarms, I hope.
comment by troutbend on Feb 16, 2012 10:41 AM ()
yes,we do.But the smoke alarm did not go off.The smoke was sort of a haze and not sure what happened and need to check this out.Maybe it takes a while as the alarm is in the bedroom.

You are NOT stupid Fredo, we all make mistakes, please don't beat yourself up over it. I am just glad it wasn't any worse - look on the bright side - you are fine and dandy, just lost a microwave! I have left the oven on and stuff like that, it happens to us all.
