Sharing Favorites

I have long been an obsessed reader so I thought I would
share three of my favorite fiction writers with you. I am
always in line at the library for their books.

Lee Smith is my favorite Southern writer. She doesn't write
cutsey books and her newest is very personal to her because
her son was schizophrenic and in a mental hospital for several
years. It is called Guests On Earth. On Agate Hill is one
of my favorites as are Family Linen, Fair and Tender Ladies,
The Devil's Dream. Saving Grace is also very good.

Margaret Atwood writes about everything and writes a lot of
poetry. The books that I love the most are: Alias Grace,
and The Handmaid's Tale. I don't care for her science
fiction. The Cat's Eye is also good.

Ruth Rendell is the absolute cream of all mystery writers and
is very prolific. She also writes as Barbara Vine. Her
books literally keep one glued to the page. I love A Dark
Adapted Eye and a Fatal Inversion by B. Vine and some of
my favorites under her own name are A judgement In Stone,
and The Face of Trespass.

Elizabeth George is another favorite of mine but sometimes
she kills off favorite characters.

I admit unashamedly that fiction is my favorite read. It
takes me to another world that I can inhabit for a day.

I know what you mean- fiction is a vacation from reality while still keeping the brain engaged.

I didn't know about B. Vine. I love mysteries, too, especially by female authors with female protagonists.

I find so much interesting factual material to read that I have no real interest in fiction, although I have read a few.

I love Ruth Rendell. Didn't know about Barbara Vine. Thanks for the info.
I borrowed a book from the library a few days ago and then wondered why. I don't have time to read just now.

I think some of her best are the ones she does under the Vine name. Isn't
she just the best!!

Thanks for the recommendations. My favorite authors, so far, have been Lee Child, Loren Estleman, Thomas Perry, et al, and their books are always on a waiting list. What I like about them is the intricate suspense these writers excel at. But I am always open to new things. I only started reading fiction again a few years ago. I was so turned off by Sophie's Choice and Ford Maddox Ford, that I just, after that, read biographies, and news-related stuff.

I rely heavily on the library which is just a few blocks from my house. We
had a book club that originated there but it was not a good one. I would
like one that had more spirited people in it.
