Mandy's Trip

We took Mandy with us to Muskogee yesterday to see my
friend June. June will be 91 in October and she is still
a very pretty lady. She is in the memory center because
she has some type of dementia. She is forgetful but not
like Alzheimer's patients.

Mandy had a wonderful time, enjoying the ride and the
attention. She did so well that I could not help
wondering why Ellie and the girls didn't take her to
Nashville. They are on the way home today so she won't
be lonely much longer.

I felt so remorseful not doing more for those friends
who are shut in assisted living centers. I know their
families do the best they can but I could certainly
write more and send surprise packages. Ruth and June
are too far away to visit often.

June was thrilled to get the biscotti and dried fruit
and gift of jewelry that I took her. I was thinking
that stamps and stationary would be thoughtful little
gifts as well as perfume and face creams. All of my
friends are vain and I am glad for them. I am vowing
to do better and to be more thoughtful.

I'm not in assisted living but I too love getting mail like that - there's the social part and the fun, getting-a-gift part. (That's why companies should do free samples in the mail like they used to.) But especially when a friend reconnects, it's wonderful.

Ted and I were talking last night about random acts of kindness and how
we could do more. It is our new resolution.

I suppose assisted living beats the alternative for some people but I don't know that I want it to happen to me. Is it really enough to get an occasional care package or letter from someone you may not remember all that well? Again, maybe. I am certain that your kindness toward old friends is the right thing, so let it be what it is.

That three of my friends, all brilliant women should end up with impaired
mental abilities just kills me. June had a big life. She did her
graduate work at the University of Hawaii. It can't get better than that!!
