"Magnificent Mind at any Age" by Daniel G. Amen is one of the most fascinating books that I have read in a while. He is extremely witty and extremely readable. I love the way he talks about his practice, his children and his relatives in his book. He speaks of one daughter who from infancy, "was like trying to hold onto a live and struggling salmon" and said they had to quit going to church for three years until she could be diagnosed with
ADHD and given Ritalin. He said her behavior was so embarrassing that it did nothing for his reputation as a
child Psychiatrist.
He is a clinical neuroscientist, psychiatrist and brain imaging expert. He talked about supplements, herbs, alternative medicine, but for the most part the details of his practice made up most of his book and I found it fascinating since I would have majored in psychology had it not taken so long to start making any money.
This is one non-fiction book that I found very hard to put down. He explained the secret in one sentence. "Negative thoughts make negative things happen, while positive thoughts can help you reach your goals." He cited the placebo effect and false pregnancy as two examples. He says to tell your brain what you want and match your behavior to get it.
So what do I want? To learn conversational Spanish.
