History

Looserobes post about Patton triggered a memory for me.
Shortly after my husband graduated from college, he was recalled to teach OCS classes at Ft. Belvoir, Va. Our
daughter was born in the army hospital there. I really loved the area and we spent almost every Sunday visiting
homes that were a part of our heritage.

When General MacArthur was recalled by Truman, everyone at
the Fort was very much in sympathy with the General. Many
of us went to the airport to welcome him. He saved his best speech for Congress but talked to all of us informally.
When he had finished he walked the whole perimeter of the
airport, saluting as he went so everyone could get a good look at him. He was very much a heroic figure and was
beloved by many of his men who had known his personally.
Since then, right or wrong, he has been my hero.

I suppose history has proved Truman right and our heroes
have feet of clay. I will always cherish the memory of
him and thrill to the words that"Old soldiers never die,
they just fade away". This was his closing comment to
Congress.

I hate and detest wars but if we have to have them, let us
at least have men like Patton and MacArthur.
